As much time and money as we've spent since 9-11, the goal was not to turn our first responders into a military force. And as the economy effects every department, so it does the police. We are not a combat force. No one in Louisiana complained when the military stepped in (belatedely) with their equipement and personnel. Soldiers/Sailors/Marines swear..."to defend against all enemies foreign and domestic"...What happens when they come here? You're National Guard are not trained or prepared to respond quickly to a combat scenrio. That was never the concept or intent. When does a terrorist act become an act of war? According to previous comments, Pos.Com. prevents that from ever happening...Good Luck to all of you, I am preparing for what I think eventually will happen. I don't want the Dept. of Defense calling the shots. As our economy fails, and it is and will continue to do so, I want our resources to be focused on alleviating problems, not imposing order with an army that is consuming our resources. We need an army large enough to protect our borders and contribute to an international peacekeeping force. The days of the American Empire are over. It is very clear (to those who actually do the research) that the Department of Defense plays a purely supporting role in domestic catastrophes- and then only major ones where the state has already begged the president to declare a national emergency. The DoD is there only to do what the Lead Federal Agency (FEMA) tells them to do. In a situation where there are tens of thousands of civilian casualties (read: small nuke in large metropolitan area) the DoD is THE ONLY AGENCY with sufficient medical, logistical personnel assets to handle a situation of that magnitude. If you are suffering from the effects of a nuclear blast, are you really going to scream about the constitution because an Active Army doctor is treating your wounds? Get real.
