Although Hillsman mainly addresses the content of the mass media campaigns, there's also a quantitative disparity. My wife is a caterer who keeps the TV on in the background when she is working, and she has remarked to me several times over the past few weeks that she sees virtually no Obama ads but a lot for McCain. I asked her to keep track of the count on paper, and so far it's running better than 10 to 1 for McCain. She watches mainly the cooking shows on Food TV and Home & Garden cable channels, so-called "reality shows" on Bravo, and one or two soaps on an over-the-air network channel. Because the audiences on these programs are overwhelmingly female, she strongly believes that by ignoring these outlets the Obama campaign is making a serious mistake, especially in view of the fact that the GOP has a woman at the top of their ticket. They should be running ads targeted to the bread and butter concerns of these women voters.
