Comedian and writer Al Franken has been reaching out to elected Democrats in apparent preparation for a U.S. Senate run, according to a report by the Associated Press.

The report quoted Rep. Jim Oberstar (DFL-MN08) saying Franken is “going to be making an announcement.”

Franken, currently hosting a radio show on Air America Radio, has previously expressed a desire to challenge incumbent Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN) in 2008.Franken has also reached out to Rep. Colin Peterson (DFL-MN07) and Rep. Betty McCollum (DFL-MN04).

Franken acknowledged the calls, but did aver that he had not asked Coleman for any advice.

Coleman’s seat is widely expected to be a target for national Democrats in 2008.  Given the landslide election of Sen. Amy Klobuchar (DFL-MN) in 2006, and the general rising fortunes of Democrats nationally, Coleman is considered to be vulnerable.  He won the seat in 2002, narrowly defeating Walter Mondale after the late Sen. Paul Wellstone, Coleman’s original opponent, died in a plane crash.
