Reform is needed indeed. “The biggest flaw is the dysfunctional federal system that’s designed to help employers screen workers before hiring them. Though Swift & Co. used it in accordance with regulations, the system failed to detect workers who use other people’s identities.”
It is difficult to combat a determined criminal and not infringe on the rights of those who have played by the rules and immigrated legally.
The cost and disruption to Swift & Co. is a start, but penalties for companies that hire illegal aliens must be accompanied by stiffer penalties for the illegal aliens themselves.
