Coleman campaigns for NRSC post

Norm Coleman is locked in an “intense race” with John Cornyn to become the next chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, according to The Hill. The Capitol Hill publication reports that both Senators have been seeking to lock down promises of support from their colleagues in recent days. “Coleman’s vigorous behind-the-scenes maneuvering has raised eyebrows because he is in the midst of a close reelection race against Democratic challenger Al Franken,” The Hill notes.
Four years ago Coleman also sought the NRSC chairmanship, but was thwarted by Elizabeth Dole. In retrospect that may have been the best outcome for the freshman Senator. Given the brutal prospects facing the GOP this cycle, leading the electoral cavalry charge is probably not the safest position to find yourself. Just ask Liddy Dole.
The Franken campaign seized on the news as evidence of Coleman’s lack of independence from the GOP. “Classic Norm Coleman — says one thing in Minnesota, says the exact opposite in Washington at the same time,” said communications director Andy Barr in a statement. “You can’t trust a word out of either side of his mouth.”
