Low-income individuals and families can get free tax help Saturday at the Convention Center, thanks to collaboration between Minneapolis, St. Paul and Greater Twin Cities United Way.

The fair, dubbed Claim It!, is for individuals who make less than $28,000 a year and families who make less than $38,000, the Pioneer Press reported.

Organizers say they want to ensure that lower income people receive the full tax credit they’re entitled to.

Tax preparations start at 10 a.m. Saturday. Participants must bring a photo ID, a Social Security card and income statements.

Free Tax Preparation:

In 80 cities nationwide, ACORN has partnered with the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Preparation (VITA) program to provide free tax preparation for low and moderate income taxpayers who cannot afford traditional paid preparers. The ACORN Tax Preparation Centers can electronically file current year taxes and provide fast, direct-deposited refunds, usually in 7 to 10 working days.

EITC Claims for Eligible Families:

ACORN wants to make sure that families are claiming their Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a federal anti-poverty program that provides working families with up to $4,536 in tax credits. Between 15 to 25% of all EITC eligible families do not claim their credit, amounting to more than $12 billion in unclaimed credits every year. The ACORN Tax Preparation Centers provide direct EITC assistance and aggressively spread the word about EITC through door-to-door outreach.
