A Look Back at Blogging in the Capital City

We are kicking off a new column thing here on MinMon and apparently I get to be first. Don’t worry — I’m sure it’ll get better as we go through the week and you get to read the rest of the crew. We will all be writing a bit about our time here. It’s almost six months!
Starting off the project, I anticipated lots of campaigny goodness and some work on St. Paul issues. Sadly, the blogosphere (liberal, conservative and otherwise) lacks St. Paul lovin’, so I hoped to add to the St. Paul murmurings with MinMon prompting me to write more often and more originally. I mean, really, it’s the Capital City, it’s the place where the big stuff happens, it’s the hub, it’s the place to be, it’s where the governor’s mansion is, it’s where the big building with the horses is. St. Paul — we’ve got it all…except, apparently, buzz.So I have written about St. Paul, and things in St. Paul have obliged by being interesting. What started out as itty-bitty blips about the Bridges is now being recognized as a huge story — a possibly unprecedented type of development project. The complete shift of the WSCO board (How many times does a planning council have to beg and plead to get people to run, compared to this turnout in the triple digits?), the withdrawal of the rezoning permit, and the TriCouncil have all been exciting news.
I have also talked a lot about some of the races that we had this past year. Wrote about the craziness that is the Minnesota Supreme Court (Really, who isn’t excited about grain bins?!). And even headed down to the Capitol for some excitement here and there, including opening day.
In the future I hope to write more about St. Paul, St. Paul, St. Paul. I also anticipate writing about development, which is really crucial to local communities, and some of these things will have broader impact.
My favorite story so far has to be this one. Because really…how many times will I EVER get to say anything about magical elves? (And thanks, Robin, for making sure that one didn’t have to be tucked at the bottom of a boring story.)
Thanks to everyone who’s been reading us from Day One and the rest of you who we’ve picked up since then. It has been very exciting to be a part of this project, and I’ll still be blogging over here in the utterly fabulous Capital City of St. Paul.
Oh, and for the search engines…St. Paul. St. Paul. St. Paul.
