Mac Hammond: “I would almost welcome an IRS audit”

By Jeff Fecke
Sunday, February 11, 2007 at 2:19 pm

Pastor Mac Hammond acknowledged Sunday that he is well-compensated by Living Word Christian Center, and affirmed many of the charges against him, but justified his financial dealings with the church, saying “If I don’t understand the principles that govern increase, I can’t preach them.”

Rhetorically, he asked, “Is this a self-serving message?  Not at all.”

In a detailed and often defiant hour-long sermon, Hammond claimed that his dealings with the church have been directed by scripture and by God, and that God’s “Holy Ghost siphon” was directing money from sinners to his church, and to him.

Hammond took pains to note that he “[chose] not to believe the media is abusing its authority,” adding that “They’re going to have a hard time figuring out what kind of church we are.”  However, he was harshly critical of the idea that “spirituality and materialism don’t go together.”

“It takes wealth, folks, to establish God’s covenant on Earth,” he said.  “It takes money to buy airtime.  It takes money to be influential.  If you have no money, you can’t even love, because love is about giving and not being a burden.”

Hammond dismissed claims that he was drawing funds illicitly from the church, saying, “I don’t set my own compensation.  That’s set by an independent board.”  He added that before he left board meetings, he always admonished members of the board to comply with IRS guidelines.  He also claimed that his compensation package had been run by a Washington-based law firm that specializes in ministerial compensation, but he did not identify the firm specifically.

Hammond added, “In a perverse sort of way, I would almost welcome an IRS audit.  I’ve labored for twenty-five years to dot every i and cross every t.”

more insideHammond also disagreed with the meaning of events that resulted in complaints being filed by Citizens for Responsibility in Washington (CREW).

Hammond characterized $1.9 million in personal loans as “simply vehicles of compensation used by the board,” and said he had paid all loans back by 2005.

He also defended his purchase and subsequent lease-back of airplanes to the church, saying the demands on his time from other churches meant that “The only way we could [visit other churches nationwide] was to have our own airplane.”

Hammond acknowledged that he was leasing the plane back to the church for more than he was paying monthly for the plane, but said the lease had been established at “fair market value,” and allowed him to take advantage of tax breaks for depreciation on the airplane.  He also said that the money he made on the deal was simply part of his compensation.

Hammond also chided the media for claims that the church had purchased him two condos in Florida.  “I don’t own two condos in Florida.  That is an inaccuracy.  Better than that, I own two houses, Amen!”

Hammond said he had made the purchases as “investments,” and claimed that the property value had doubled.  He made similar claims about a hangar purchased by the church.

Hammond defended himself against charges that he was being greedy, noting that he was “the largest contributor in the history of this church.”  He claimed that since 2001, he and his wife have donated $2 million to the church.

But Hammond was unapologetic for earning a significant salary from the church.

“I am very, very well compensated.  God has provided for me in a way that is super-abundant,” he said.

Hammond closed with a carefully calibrated shot at the media.

“I believe the media wants to tell the truth.  But the media has such a power over public opinion that it can be a real temptation to manipulate the truth just enough to serve an agenda.”

Hammond closed his sermon to a standing ovation, and the passing of the collection basket.

I bet an apology will not be published when the truth be told.

I love this part best….

“Members of the Democracy Alliance include billionaires like George Soros and his son Jonathan Soros, former Rockefeller Family Fund president Anne Bartley, San Francisco Bay Area donors Susie Tompkins Buell and Mark Buell, Hollywood director Rob Reiner, Taco Bell heir Rob McKay … as well as New York financiers like Steven Gluckstern.”

Embarrased Flock I watched the program and his “flock” did not seem embarrassed…they gave him a standing ovation at the start and end of his talk. Also it seemed to me it he was apologetic about certain things he has done, just not about how the church has managed and set up his compensation. Of course on this issue most who read the MM, side with and quickly believe CREW instead of a well respected law firm Faegre and Benson who by the way has been a champion on many fronts for liberal causes. I am sure they have been complicit in a unethical-illegal scheme to make the pastor of this mega church rich and fleece the thousand who attend of their money. PLEASE!!

All this IRS talk has me wondering When someone will take a look at the tangled finances of George Soros, Inc. This guy is behind not only the group that filed the complaint, but pays these sock puppets on MiniMoni to publicize it.

Honestly, you scratch the surface of just about any moonbat activity on the internet and up pops Soros and his fat wallet.

I think it would be an absolute scream to have Hammond pass the hat to pay for a forensic accountant to dig through Soro’s tax records…and maybe having a peek into his sock puppets finances as well!

I’d be hap, hap, happy to post whatever records you dig up on my blog Pair O’ Dice…no charge!

I agree with Not So Swiftee on this one- Leave the predator alone! Why should any thinking person wish to see this charlatan be jailed- his flock isn’t being “fleeced”- as is proper, his congregation has volunteered to be “sheared” by its loving sheep-herder. Perhaps god has not ordained only that people like Mr Hammond should become rich, but that the fools that follow him should be poor. More’s the pity- but life isn’t fair (how else to explain that MB was re-elected?).

Check for yourself.  This is just some guy who started a supposed ‘church’ to make money.  Joel Osteen talks about money and stuff like MH but atleast his dad started the church and he just took over for him.  No one in Mac’s family had anything to do with the ‘church’.  He has no training and is not affiliated with any organized religion.

My bad OK, make that “elected” rather than “re-elected”. She’s still an embarrassment to anyone that requires rationale thought from their elected representatives. And regarding the extraction of riches from Hammonds not-yet-poor flock. Well, you wouldn’t be much use to him if you didn’t have money, would you? Just give him time- it’ll take a while for you to actually be poor (personally)- of course, I’m sure “Mac” will let you spend whatever you need of the 34M his organization is raking in from you saps yearly.

Just another CEO Mac seems to be just another CEO with a sprawling business campus in Brooklyn Park.  Just an observation.  Perhaps this whole thing has made me appreciate my own Pastor even more and I am sure as more people read this they will feel the same.  The automatic deductions off of the congregations credit and debit cards really bothers me.  My former best friend has been taken in by this “business”.  If you visit the website there is even a business directory of the members which I found interesting.  She tried to get  me to go with her but it just seemed too much even as I entered the door.  I struggle every day with where my friend went.  I went to a luncheon there and listened to some women members talk.  No topic was off limits, abortions, sex, I tried to concentrate on my chicken as the chef is supposed to be very good and I must agree on that.

As a Christian and Conservative, I hope Mac gets shutdown I used to date a girl that went to Living Word. After going there once to here a “special speaker”, i was so hacked off i could barely think straight.  That church promotes things that are absolutely anti scripture. The main point to every sermon ive heard is how God wants people to get rich and have lots of things, and the way you get that is by giving to the church (funny). So between the numerous passings of the offering plate youre told how you can get every earthly desire by dumping more than you can afford into Macs pocket, for a new plane, or another house in florida, or for one these snake oil sellers new Rolex. Christianity has been reduced to mere American materialism, and regardless of what you think of christianity, that is not what the bible teaches.  I took a tape of a sermon and broke it down, main points, scripture used, etc, and tried to refute it to my girlfriend using scripture and common sense. She of course had already drank the cool-aid and would have none of it.
Mac and his whole crew absolutley prey off the dumb and slow witted, people who dont pick up there bibles, or cant put a logical argument together.  While the Democrats do it plenty with Jesse Jackson and his like, i still hope Mac goes down hard.

So you’re a Christian and Conservative? If you were really a christian (which I really doubt, based on your comments), you wouldn’t have told the bold-faced lies that you spewed here.  ie: “That church promotes things that are absolutely anti scripture.” And, “The main point to every sermon ive heard is how God wants people to get rich . . . by giving to the church,”  “. . . by dumping more than you can afford . . .”

If you had actually attended multiple times, you obviously were not paying attention.  Mac usually say that if you feel uncomfortable at the offering, and can’t give with a willing heart, then don’t give.  He does not require you to give.  If it was required, you would have had to pay to get in.

Tithing and giving are scriptural.  Most churches however, are so afraid of offending anyone by asking for money, for fear that the people won’t come back, that they don’t say much about why you need to or how it’s supposed to be done.

Churches have been teaching for centuries that Jesus was poor, and they take scripture out of context to make thier case.  He was not a poor man.  Did you know he had a house?  He invited His deciples there.  He had a traveling ministry.  He had a lot of expenses for Himself, His deciples, and all of their families.  Judas carried the money bag.  You don’t need a treasurer if you only have a couple of nickles to rub together – and Judas was stealing from the bag!!  Yet all of His needs were met and they had plenty.

You can’t find an itemized list or a financial statement, therefore we must assume he was poor?

If you really are a christian, I challenge you to do a real, hard study on what the Bible says regarding wealth.  And remember, God takes pleasure in the prosperity of his people. (That’s in there too.)

Also, that crack about “the dumb and slow witted, people who dont pick up there bibles” shows you had your eyes shut too.  Most of the people there (many with a much higher I.Q. than yourself, I’m sure) have their Bibles in hand and follow along as he preaches, or did you forget that?

So you don’t like Mac Hammond.  That’s fine.  Find the church where you belong, and do your part.  As a Christian, you should be praying for him rather than jumping on the hog pile spewing lies along with the un-saved.

Jesus was rich? I can’t find my Bible right now, so I have to ask in which Gospel do we hear that Jesus had two vacation homes?

I also want to know the name of His accountant.  I’ll bet it took some doing to set up tax-exempt foundations in those days.

The Filth of the world- Why revival lingers
Until humble self-effacing men return to the pulpits of our churches in the United States and Canada,  we will continue to stumble along,  until we reach the point where the grieved Holy Spirit is withdrawn from us- like the Shekinah from the temple.
Where has spiritual discernment gone amongst the body of believers? Discernment of the Spirit is imparted to all  who belong to the Lamb of God, by the Spirit of God. As a believer grows in grace, so does his comprehension and discernment of all things spiritual. It is part of the Armour of God. God leaves no believer unarmed and vulnerable to the attacks of the enemy- NOT ONE! All of His people are provided with discernment. Whether we listen and heed to his warnings is our responsibility.
My spirit is torn and nauseated by those who preach a false gospel such as you have in your city and state.  He and his fellow preachers like Kenneth Copeland and Creflo Dollar, amongst others, will one day have to answer to God- hopefully sooner than later, for the sake of the people of God.

Keep your eyes on the Cross and your face in the Word of God. Listen to the Spirit within you and He will keep you safe in the arms of  our Lord. Follow in His footsteps, the footsteps of the Lamb. Together may we all learn to understand the true meaning of the Cross, to truly comprehend its power, to walk
in it’s shadow.

In conclusion,  let me say that the gospel of health, wealth and prosperity being taught by Mac Hammond is a false gospel. It is not the gospel of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. The soul who loves the world and the things of the world is against God. The soul that does this today will learn that the consequences are separation from God,
spiritual darkness and death. The deepest meaning of the cross is not to fulfill one’s self and our worldly lusts, but rather
to deny one’s self and surrender everything to God.

Pray that God will bring down the proud and those who would lead His people astray.
  in it’s shadow.

Also I went to the churches site and read their public statement which I see posted no where on your site?  Please don’t seek to play the part of being a fair journalistic organization seeking to follow the standard rules of press integrity. Please don’t act like you are willing to accurately represent Hammonds churches position…your a blog with obvious and strong progressive leanings and all us readers know it. In fact Jeff Feckes opening sentences in this article which state Hammond “affirmed” many of the charges against him in his message this past Sunday is startling and reveals a clear lack of fairness. Well stated Rasha To the person who criticized me: I can understand why you would be upset when someone attacks someone you respect. My goal is not to get the members of Macs church all hacked off at me. I would prefer if they just dug into their bibles and realize that the things I have heard at that church are not taught in the bible. Ironically you bring up taking scripture out of context, which is the only way you can reach the conclusion that scripture says we should be fat, comfortable, numerous vacation homes, etc.  I heard a “special” speaker there once whose main point was give a lot because if you do, God will give you back more. . . . . MONETARILY! It really blew my mind. God has become a good stock broker returning monetary investment at a gain. He used the example of how he gave his plane away because he knew that God would give him a better one. Charity for the sake of more earthly possesions isnt charity, its just business. I have no problem with people making money, but to preach that the ultimate goal of christians is to be comfortable and live a fun, comfortable life is not biblical and wrong in my opinion.  It showed with the girl i was seeing.  Her life ambition was to move to Lake Placid NY because there a lot of fun things to do there, and just have fun her whole life.  I can see how she got that life view from that church. If i die and have done nothing else but have fun and be comfortable, I think i would feel that i wasted my life.

How many of these pro-Hammond comments are Swiftee You really need to take any pro-Hammond comments here with a grain of salt when this Swiftee guy is around. He's been caught posting phony information as a commenter on other message boards under phony names, so it's likely he's got more than one moniker around here too.]

PLEASE!!

Why Not Just Get a Copy and Post it? In your effort to “report the facts” why not just get a copy of his talk from the church and post it in its entirety?

I have an entire copy and am willing to post it I did not post it in its entirety due to its copyright.  The amount I used was allowable due to fair use.

If the church would grant me permission, I will post the entire piece so readers may decide for themselves.

Let's grant Pastor Mac's wish If Fly Boy Pastor Mac would welcome an audit, by all means, bring on the auditors! Send the IRS a copy of his speech. I wonder what Pastor Mac's poster girl “Tax Litigation Attorney” Michele Bachmann would have done if Hammond's file would have landed on her desk?

All this IRS talk has me wondering When someone will take a look at the tangled finances of George Soros, Inc. This guy is behind not only the group that filed the complaint, but pays these sock puppets on MiniMoni to publicize it.

Honestly, you scratch the surface of just about any moonbat activity on the internet and up pops Soros and his fat wallet.

I think it would be an absolute scream to have Hammond pass the hat to pay for a forensic accountant to dig through Soro's tax records…and maybe having a peek into his sock puppets finances as well!

I'd be hap, hap, happy to post whatever records you dig up on my blog Pair O' Dice…no charge!

What do you Living Word folks think?

I agree with Not So Swiftee on this one- Leave the predator alone! Why should any thinking person wish to see this charlatan be jailed- his flock isn't being “fleeced”- as is proper, his congregation has volunteered to be “sheared” by its loving sheep-herder. Perhaps god has not ordained only that people like Mr Hammond should become rich, but that the fools that follow him should be poor. More's the pity- but life isn't fair (how else to explain that MB was re-elected?).

Flock poor? Mac's flock poor?  Only $34,000,000 in revenue last year…we all aren't poor; something must be working.  MB re-elected?  This is her first term in the 6th district but I know the facts don't count on this site.

this isnt a church This is not a ministry or church like everyone is saying it is.  It is not registered anywhere! Check for yourself.  This is just some guy who started a supposed 'church' to make money.  Joel Osteen talks about money and stuff like MH but atleast his dad started the church and he just took over for him.  No one in Mac's family had anything to do with the 'church'.  He has no training and is not affiliated with any organized religion.

My bad OK, make that “elected” rather than “re-elected”. She's still an embarrassment to anyone that requires rationale thought from their elected representatives. And regarding the extraction of riches from Hammonds not-yet-poor flock. Well, you wouldn't be much use to him if you didn't have money, would you? Just give him time- it'll take a while for you to actually be poor (personally)- of course, I'm sure “Mac” will let you spend whatever you need of the 34M his organization is raking in from you saps yearly.

Pardon my curiousity, brethern . . . Two quick questions:

1.  Was it Jesus who chased the moneychangers out of the temple, with some awfully harsh words for what they were doing?  Or am I thinking of someone else?

2.  Does George Soros operate through a tax-exempt religious organization?

If you want a real preacher, preaching what the bible really says, check out http://www.desiringgod.org</br>

re: “Just another crook” Sounds like someone's a bit off the deep end.

It is obvious by your ignorant rant that you have never actually listened to any message delivered in that church.  You call him a crook based on what you've read (and whatever other misguided notions you have), submit some stupid comments and expose yourself for the decieved, foolish ignoramus that you are!  Fraud?  That would be you.

So you're a Christian and Conservative? If you were really a christian (which I really doubt, based on your comments), you wouldn't have told the bold-faced lies that you spewed here.  ie: “That church promotes things that are absolutely anti scripture.” And, “The main point to every sermon ive heard is how God wants people to get rich . . . by giving to the church,”  “. . . by dumping more than you can afford . . .”

If you had actually attended multiple times, you obviously were not paying attention.  Mac usually say that if you feel uncomfortable at the offering, and can't give with a willing heart, then don't give.  He does not require you to give.  If it was required, you would have had to pay to get in.

Tithing and giving are scriptural.  Most churches however, are so afraid of offending anyone by asking for money, for fear that the people won't come back, that they don't say much about why you need to or how it's supposed to be done.

You don't need a treasurer if you only have a couple of nickles to rub together – and Judas was stealing from the bag!!  Yet all of His needs were met and they had plenty.

You can't find an itemized list or a financial statement, therefore we must assume he was poor?

If you really are a christian, I challenge you to do a real, hard study on what the Bible says regarding wealth.  And remember, God takes pleasure in the prosperity of his people. (That's in there too.)

Also, that crack about “the dumb and slow witted, people who dont pick up there bibles” shows you had your eyes shut too.  Most of the people there (many with a much higher I.Q. than yourself, I'm sure) have their Bibles in hand and follow along as he preaches, or did you forget that?

So you don't like Mac Hammond.  That's fine.  Find the church where you belong, and do your part.  As a Christian, you should be praying for him rather than jumping on the hog pile spewing lies along with the un-saved.

Jesus was rich? I can't find my Bible right now, so I have to ask in which Gospel do we hear that Jesus had two vacation homes?

I also want to know the name of His accountant.  I'll bet it took some doing to set up tax-exempt foundations in those days.

Together may we all learn to understand the true meaning of the Cross, to truly comprehend its power, to walk

in it's shadow.

The deepest meaning of the cross is not to fulfill one's self and our worldly lusts, but rather

to deny one's self and surrender everything to God.

Pray that God will bring down the proud and those who would lead His people astray.

  in it's shadow.

Your Playing Games Robin Come on Robin, this attempt at honoring the churches wishes is a little shallow… you post links to all types of information throughout your site without “permission” yet not one to the churches site where you can watch, download, or get a free DVD of Hammonds message this past Sunday sent to you? In your coverage of this story you link to CREWS posting of confidential documents and post them yourself without “permission”? Also I went to the churches site and read their public statement which I see posted no where on your site?  Please don't seek to play the part of being a fair journalistic organization seeking to follow the standard rules of press integrity. Please don't act like you are willing to accurately represent Hammonds churches position…your a blog with obvious and strong progressive leanings and all us readers know it. In fact Jeff Feckes opening sentences in this article which state Hammond “affirmed” many of the charges against him in his message this past Sunday is startling and reveals a clear lack of fairness. Did he watch the same message I did?????? Please stop (You and Jeff) giving others ammunition by being so shallow…your readers are really smarter than that!!
