Interview with Al Franken, U.S. Senate Candidate
Monday, February 19, 2007 at 8:30 am

On February 14th, humorist and Air America radio personality Al Franken made official what political observers have long expected: he will run for the DFL nomination for U.S. Senate in 2008, hoping to face off against incumbent Republican Norm Coleman. In the wake of the announcement and, according to reports, several successful events to kick off the campaign, Franken took a few minutes to answer some questions about why he’s running, major issues, and standing up to the right-wing smear machine.
Joe Bodell: Straightforward question out of the gate: Why are you running for the United States Senate?
Al Franken: Here’s a straightforward answer: I’m not happy with the leadership Senator Coleman has provided on the issues that matter to me and to Minnesota families, and I know I’ll be a leader in the Senate. I’m going to lead on universal health care, on renewable energy, on taking care of our veterans, and on restoring America’s standing in the world. I think we need more of that kind of leadership. That’s the kind of Senators Minnesota has given the country: leaders like Hubert Humphrey and Paul Wellstone and Amy Klobuchar. And that’s the kind of Senator I’ll be.
Read more after the break.JB: Moreso than most recent candidates for statewide office, your name is already known to many Minnesotans. Which particular aspects of your experiences do you think prepare you both to run for and serve in the U.S. Senate?
AF: You know, I’ve been in this debate for a while now, with my writing and my radio show. People, I think, know me not just as a guy they’ve seen on TV, but as a guy who stands up for his principles and is willing to speak out on important issues. Take my show

Lord Help Us! If anyone knows of a candidate who has an intelligent resolve to a problem that has been going on for over 50 years (thanks to our legislators who are not enforcing the constitution nor our immigration laws,) please let me know who.
This government is run by a sad group on greedy corporations.
We could start a resolve to this process by just enforcing the laws already in place.

Don’t be afraid to be funny I’ve always been a fan of Al Franken. I was one when I was a Breck Student in 1991 and I have been all through my years of college and young adulthood in New York City. Al is tough, smart, and has a wonderful sense of humor. His humor can be bold and brassy, subtle, warm, absurd, or deadpan. One common thread though is that you always knew back then and know today that Al Franken is a caring and grounded person. I think his humor is a terrific asset and I think it should be one of the foundations of his offense against primary rivals and Coleman. He-will-run-rings-around-opponents in this race and in the Senate if he expresses rather than conseals his most indearing talent, in the service of what he cares about. Gore talked about Bush Sr. and Quayle looking like “deer in the headlights” during the 92′ debates. Humorous moments like that can be lethal to opponents because they have the viewers developing their own carnival images of them. I think it’s great that Al is running, and the only thing that can keep him from winning is if he puts away the most advantitious tool in his toolbox.

I really want you to be my Senator, so…. Senator Franken,
Folks from your state come to my state four months of the year. Does that mean there is really cheap housing available in your state for those four months? Would that satisfy a residency requirement for voter eligibility? And in those four months, do you notice the drivers are better than usual?

Important Issues Hi Al,
Thanks for running. I look forward to having you as my Senator, following in Paul Wellstone’s footsteps. I know you are passionate about people, especially our troops, as a Senate candidate should be.
In addition to the issues you’ve mentioned, I care about making sure we have free and fair elections in our country. We need to make sure that voters are able to submit paper ballots which are then counted. Please make sure no separate paper trail is used. For the disabled, I recommend the use of a voting machine which then prints out a paper ballot.
If you could also push for Instant Runoff Voting, this would be a great benefit for all voters and eliminate the spoiler factor of third party candidates.
Thanks for listening,
- Tom

The comprehensive Al Franken It’s great to know that Al is for comprehensive immigration reform! That scheme will flood the U.S. with new LegalImmigrants and give even more political power inside the U.S. to the corrupt MexicanGovernment.
But, wait, that’s not all: gazillions of potential IllegalAliens around the world will see it for what it is: a massive amnesty. And, they’ll come a-running.
Think IllegalImmigration is bad now? Wait until “reform”.
Oh, did I add that all those that would be put on the “PathToCitizenship” would jump ahead of those potential LegalImmigrants who’ve been waiting patiently for their chance to come to the U.S.? Yeah, it would screw them too.
Is it that Al can’t figure that out, or that he doesn’t care?

Good interview I appreciate the way Joe Bodell handled this interview. Lots of substantive questions. Good job.
I fear that much of the coverage Al Franken is going to get will focus on his humor rather than his issues. Reporters will look for the jokes rather than the platform. And much as I enjoy Franken’s humor, he’s taking the run seriously and so am I. And so is the Monitor. Keep it up.
