Debate over the war in Iraq and President Bush’s  troop surge have dominated the first seven weeks of the 110th Congress. But what have members of the Minnesota delegation been working on in January and February?

The freshmen in the delegation haven’t introduced much legislation, which is to be expected for newcomers to Congress. Reps. Keith Ellison and Tim Walz, Democrats from the 5th and 1st districts respectively, haven’t sponsored any legislation through Feb. 18. Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann of the 6th District and Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar have each sponsored one piece of legislation. The most-prolific sponsors have been Republican Sen. Norm Coleman, with 15 bills, and  Rep. James Oberstar, the Democrat from the 8th District, with six.

The bills by the Minnesota delegation span a broad range of issues including immigration rules pertaining to sex offenders and outlawing fraudulent college degrees. Below are bills currently sponsored by Minnesota senators and representatives, according to the Library of Congress’ THOMAS search engine.

John Kline (Republican, 2nd District)
H.R.349: The “10 by 10 Act

What’s even more interesting is what Bachmann has voted against http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincities/news/editorial/16683666.htm

And last Friday, when she had the opportunity to CUT taxes for small business with H.R. 976, “Small Business Tax Relief Act,” Bachmann voted AGAINST that too.
