Audio: John McCain robocalls remind voters how he bungled his emergency return to D.C.

Does John McCain really want to go there?
A reader in Mankato, Minn., sends a new voicemail message left by the Republican National Committee that accuses Barack Obama of not putting in enough time dealing with the economic crisis. “On the very day our elected leaders gathered in Washington to deal with the financial crisis, Barack Obama spent just 20 minutes with economic advisors, but hours at a celebrity Hollywood fundraiser.” The image that comes to mind, of course, is the live feed of McCain getting his makeup put on before a Katie Couric interview. After “suspending” his campaign and postponing his visit with David Letterman, he did the Couric gig and then stuck around until the next morning before flying back to Washington, D.C.

Our sister site in Colorado reports today that the GOP has been doing the same robocalls there, and Talking Points Memo says readers in Wisconsin and Missouri are receiving them too.

Hello, I’m calling on behalf of John McCain and the RNC because Barack Obama and his fellow Democrats got caught putting Hollywood above America. On the very day our elected leaders gathered in Washington to deal with the financial crisis, Barack Obama spent just 20 minutes with economic advisors, but hours at a celebrity Hollywood fundraiser. Where are the Democrats’ priorities? This call is paid for by McCain-Palin 2008 and the Republican National Committee at (202)863-8500. Thank you.

Robocalls are illeagal under Minnesota law. This should have been reported to the Attorney General for a cease and desist order.
