In a stunning interview with Chris Matthews of MSNBC, Rep. Michele Bachmann called on the media to investigate anti-American sentiment in Congress, after slamming Barack Obama as “anti-American.” The accusations by Bachmann spurred massive fundraising for her opponent and the creation of a movement to urge Congress to censure Bachmann.
On MSNBC, she said, “What I would say is that the news media should do a penetrating expose and take a look. I wish they would. I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out, are they pro-America or anti-America? I think the American people would love to see an expose like that.”
On Obama she said, “Absolutely, I’m very concerned that he may have anti-American views.”
Not 24 hours earlier, Bachmann said, “If the presidency would somehow go to Barack Obama, I would welcome him to the 6th District as well. As a matter of fact, I would put my hand on his shoulder and give him a kiss if he wanted to.”
Her appearance on Matthews’ “Hardball” prompted outrage among Obama supporters and resulted in her opponent, El Tinklenberg, raking in as much as $200 a minute in fundraising contributions Friday evening.
Minnesota Democratic Party Chairman Brian Melendez cautioned Bachmann: “The last politician who used that term that carelessly was Joe McCarthy, and Michele Bachmann seems anxious to step into his shoes.”

That was one of the scariest things I have ever seen. My heart was racing watching this crazy woman on Hardball today! She seems even more radical and extreme than Palin! God help us all from this very scary over the edge Michelle Bachman!

Literally, the most frightening thing I’ve EVER seen on TV in my entire lifetime! Are we witnessing a new era of McCarthyism? She actually referred to liberals as “anti-American” and called for an investigation of Congress to search for and root out anti-American elected officials.
Add this to Sarah Palin’s incendiary comments that Obama “pals around with terrorists” and the McCain Campaign’s new robo calls claiming that Obama “worked closely” with a terrorist whose radical group “killed Americans” and you have a recipe for the next great American witch hunt and a call to violence against Obama and other “leftist” (anti-American) leaders.
This is very dangerous rhetoric coming out of the Republican Party!!! Every American should study McCarthyism, read the Crucible, and send $$$$$$ to Bachman’s opponent (Tinklenberg) as soon as possible.
Seriously, do it now! I just sent $10. Anyone can afford 5 or 10 bucks!!!

Bachmann needs to be voted out. She’s a complete moron lead around by the conservative media. She blamed this financial crisis on blacks and other minorities trying to be middle class. Something she picked out of right-wing “Investor’s Business Daily”.
Too bad Chris Matthews didn’t call her out on her suspected racism. And too bad Chris Matthews didn’t ask Bachmann how she would characterize Sarah Palin when her husband was a registered member, as recent as 2002, with the Alaska Independence Party, a radical group that advocates for Alaskan secession from the United States.

Hey there, Hope you folks in Minnessota can kick this nut job out. America needs to send a loud and strong message to this type of politics. This nation is heading for difficult times. I’m in Tennessee, and even here in a southern red state, I’ve never heard any politician sound that scary. Does Ms. Bachman understand that her distinguished colleagues were elected by the voters of this free country, and we all think of election day as sacred? Is Ms. Bachman insinuating that anyone who votes as a Democrat is un-American? Please do us all a favor, Minnesota, and vote her out of office!

To that end they will engage in whatever vote hijacking they think is necessary because they don’t think anyone outside of their mindset should be allowed to vote anyway! Despite being a political junkie, this is my very first blog post ever. I’d rather listen to what people have to say than force an opinion on them. So, when I heard Matthews introduce a representative from Minnesota, I decided to listen. I have two kids at Carleton and over the years have developed a deep sense of respect for all Minnesotans. During my visits, I have found people there to be honest, kind, industrious, ethical, accepting of differences and most of all ethical. For me MN is not an “outpost” it is a place where people are sophisticated and fair-minded and don’t deserve to be represented to the rest of the country by someone like Bachman, whose comments will (I think) be remembered for a long time by many people across the country for being so disrespectul to all citizens of this country–republican, democratic or independent. I’m honestly so sorry this happened to all Minnesotans. Not a single person in your state deserves to be tarnished by association, even the small slice that may agree with her views.

I distinctly remember seeing a video of George Bush moving through the crowd after a State of the Union address the year she was elected, and she leaning over to lay a hand on his shoulder, and would not let go, very demanding and brazen, just as she said a day or so ago that she would do if Sen Obama came to her district. ugh.
Comment posted October 18, 2008 @ 10:05 pm
I am amazed that so many people are outraged by what she said. That’s the scary thing for me. Everyone here is quick to call her stupid, racist, dumb, wish she was dead, etc, but it sounds to me that you didn’t even hear what she said.
She never said liberals were anti-american for one, the host even asked her directly. She said William Ayers and his ilk were (Ayers is a self admitting domestic terrorist btw) She then stated that perhaps Obama has anti-american views as well since he hangs around with people like that. Its actually not a huge leap of logic to conclude that.
To those that think she was being a McCarthyist when she said that we should investigate the views points of other elected officials: This is not McCarthyism, you have no idea what McCarthyism is. Discovering an elected official’s viewpoint is called the vetting process and it is what we do when we elect people. It is what was done to sarah palin and I’m sure none of you have an issue with that.
If you think its wrong to investigate a politician to find out their viewpoints, then you should have the guts to say that Palin’s investigation was wrong.

I was disappointed that interviewer Chris Matthews failed to ask the question of Bachmann, “please define anti-american”? Then he would have been in a better position to take her to task over her views. Of course we all understand that what Bachmann means by anti-american is anti-status quo, anti-corporate greed, anti-elitism and anti-gross inequality. Matthews lack of penetrative questioning meant we didn’t get the opportunity to explore the substance of her argument and in many ways left Bachmann holding the patriotic high ground.

Listen to the interview again. She specifically states that people like Ayers and Resco are anti-american. (Bombing the pentagon, police stations, attempting to kill innocent people, etc) I find it disturbing that the people here would condemn Bachmann for condemning anti-americanism of that sort.

Well I for one AGREE with Bachmann. Let’s start by investigating all those who voted for the Terrorist bill that allows the President to imprison anyone as a terrorist without trial or charges, and without means to defend against them. That certainly is anti-American, and anti-constitutional. Let’s investigate those who favor wiretaps with out warrants, or even hard evidence. They too are anit-American and anti-constitutional. Let’s investigate those wh have been members of parties seeking to overthrow the American government-like trying to have Alaska secede form the union. We fought a civil war against that, and certainly that is an established position of overthrowing the government. Let’s investigate those who want to fly the Confederate flag atop our nation’s state capitols-like John McCain-here’s a specific case of allowing the symbols of over throwing American government–which many died to prevent. Let’s investigate those justices who imprison teenagers for eating a cheeseburger in a public place-that certainly impedes on American Freedoms.
Bring it on Ms Bachmann! There’s lots of work to be done.
See your party in jail soon!

America is free to many things, but also to the infiltration of ideas that are prone to destroy democracy. When our nation varied from the gold standard monetary system, it wasn’t for the betterment of this once great land, it was to fill the pockets of a few. Likewise, communism is infiltrating our public offices and Obama is soon to be most powerful proponent of a socialist America. All for what… free health care? give me a break. It is unamerican to sell out our freedoms like that be it to republicans that “scare” with islamic boogey men or democrats that lure us with free stuff.

Jeff Said: “yes! investigate communists”
Hey! I thought she was calling for investigations to root out terrorists! Are terrorists now communists too?
Boy, I guess when you use words like “anti-American” it gets a little confusing. Maybe she should have said what she meant…”investigate people who don’t share my views!”

You stupid fool, 9/11 was an Inside Job. The terrorists were Dick Cheney and crew.”"

What a deal! Another backed into a corner DUMB ASS NEO-CON FAR RIGHT-WINGED IDIOT! Stand by Minnesota and watch her go down like a led zepplin! This backwards knot head has no idea of what it is to be American or what government, or the constitution means to this Democratic Republic called the the United States of America! The founding fathers of this nation would probably SLAP HELL from the heads of Michelle Bachmann and anyone else associated with this kind of bumbling stupidity! May her opponent have a landslide victory.

PLEASE EVERYONE:
Tell all your friends to help us here in the 6th District by going to the website http://www.censurebachmann.com and vote for a censure. We have a great candidate opposing her and he MUST win. This could surely help us.
Thank You from all of us in the 6th District and especially those that are working to defeat her.

Don’t you beleive in the first amendment and the freedom of speech? Don’t you beleive in representative democracy?
Why can’t politicians speak their mind, if people don’t like what they say, they don’t vote for them. Thats what freedom and democracy is all about. And you have the incredulence to call for censure?? I am going to give you the benefit of the doubt and you are probably just misguided, but you are making yourself out to be a Fascist. Going against the freedom of speech, now that is the essence of anti-americanism.

Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences of what was said.

Ummm… Censureing is not censoring, nit. It is an act of condemnation, not a revokation of free speech.
When an ELECTED official says such outlandish things that invoke the dark days of 1950’s McCarthyism, it transcends party lines. Your opionion is as good as anyone elses, as misguided and moronic as it is…

Come on:
The destitute and starving democrats and dependents that live under the bridge have collected 1.3 million dollars for Representative bachmanns no name opponent.
After all of these homeless victims of conservative stinginess collect all the popcans in 90210 I sure hope the demoncrats remember the starving dependents when the legislature gets back in session od all the destutution money collected gets used to feed the starving next winter instead of raising taxes 6.5 billion again.

Jesus st jesus:
In case you were not un revised American histor did you know that Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin is the most prophetic citizen of the 20th century warning of creeping marxism , exactly as we see in the obamanation network.
Joe warned of N lenin that said “Give me a generation of your youth and I will give you a socialist society” It took a little more then three decades but by the posts here attacking a representative for asking questions about a marxist mesiah it looks like there is a huge collection of “conditioned graduates” shame on you for attempting to censor a duly elected representative for asking exactly who is your mesiah?

Everyone,
Let’s try to stay focused and remember that soon the federal govermant in alliance with state and local goverments may very well crush everyones ability to sya what they believe (Fairness Doctrine Bill). Michelle Bachman has every right to feel as though there are anti-American representatives in our legislature. It is the definition of anti-American that matters. Many would subscribe to the idea that if you are anti-constitutional, then by default you are anti-American. That said, all of the posts here are legitimate and I say run her out of office if you can, but there are reasons that America has arrived at this point in time, with a new left agenda ready to take hold. If you cannot see that for what it is, apply some critical thought to the proposition that this country is going to follow in the footsteps of our European neighbors, then you simply are not being intellectuallly honest. Many of you may like the idea of becoming France, Germany, or Switzerland. I can only hope that there is some thread of America left after November 4th when the social democratic party acheives a super-majority and crushes the American dream of self-reliance, rugged individualism, and steals from us the individual freedoms guarnteed in the Bill of Rights.

I agree, but do not agree with official measures to prevent someone from speaking their mind, the consquence that is “just” is the one she has already taken, which is a massive influx of support and cash to her opponent and possible election loss. And yes Jesus St Jesus, I know what Censure means, and a censure in this context is a means to censor Bachmann, all she did was speak her mind. You have every right to disagree with her, but official reprimand is a violation of free speech.

Wow… caveman talk…. “McCarthy GOOD! He blacklist people who disagree with him. Take away right to work and free speech. Ugh!”. And the rhetoric about a “marxist messiah” made me laugh so hard that milk blew out my nose…. not at the remark, but at the fact there are people stupid enough to believe it.
Oh well…. 12 more days till a new day in America….

The good people of MN deserve so much better than Rep. Bachman. She is not much more than a pathetic metaphor for what has become of a party that has lost its collective soul. Like many others, I draw comfort from reading the words of AMERICANS – Republicans, Democrats, and Independents – roundly denouncing one (Bachman) who seeks to bring America back to the dark days of Joe McCarthy.

I still can’t believe this woman made all those comments.
Two questions to update this:
–Why isn’t anybody asking McCain, before the election is up, why he was and continues to “pal around” with G. Gordon Liddy. He’s much worse a case than the tenuous ties of Obama to Bill Ayers.
–Why isn’t anybody asking more questions about the Associated Press story about Sarah Palin’s bid rigging with regard to the natural gas pipeline being built in Alasaka?
What’s going on? Michele Bachmann can drone on for minutes about this stuff but there are questions the McCain campaign needs to answer right NOW.
