New Strib Publisher: With Knight Ridder’s Death, ‘the World Has Changed’
Monday, March 05, 2007 at 12:23 pm
In a departing memo sent to staff at the St. Paul Pioneer Press today, just-named Star Tribune publisher Par Ridder explains his decision to leave. “Some of you may not see any scenario where it is okay to go to the competition,” he wrote, but “with the death of Knight Ridder the world has changed for all of us.” He said the “new and larger professional challenge” across the river — one that wouldn’t uproot his family — was too attractive to pass up.
Full memo follows.
I have accepted an offer to be the publisher at the Star Tribune and am leaving the Pioneer Press. I have given two weeks notice but, as is the standard practice when someone goes to the competition, today will be my last day at the Pioneer Press.
This move is a highly unusual end to a highly unusual year. I’d like to explain why I’m making the change.
I have a lot of respect for Dean Singleton and the successful company he has built. However, I don’ t feel I can pass up this opportunity to take on a new and larger professional challenge, particularly one that does not disrupt my family.
Leaving the Pioneer Press is a difficult decision. My family’s roots run deep with this newspaper and the city of St. Paul. It has taken me a while to get used to the idea of working across the river. But with the death of Knight Ridder the world has changed for all of us.
The competitive spirit is strong here and some of you may not see any scenario where it is okay to go to the competition. However, I greatly value the many friendships forged here and hope they will continue for years to come.
I am very proud to have been a part of the Pioneer Press. It is an excellent newspaper and will continue to do well under Media News’ ownership.
This has been a very tough year and I want to thank you for all your hard work.
