A Closer Look at the Numbers

Taking a calculator (and a spreadsheet) to the straw poll numbers from Tuesday night’s St. Paul caucuses is both fun and politically nerdy. What follows are the trends to compare with your theories.

Hillary Clinton did best in Ward 5, with 41 percent of the straw vote, and worst in Wards 3 and 4, where she couldn’t make 16 percent.

Barack Obama did not fare well downtown and on the West Side in Ward 2, where he came up just short of 15 percent. He did best in Wards 1, at 35 percent, and Ward 4, at 32 percent.

John Edwards had an overall low showing, despite what some expected. He bottomed out at under 10 percent and topped at only 22 to become the lead vote-getter in Ward 7. Dennis Kucinich pulled out 14 percent and Obama and Clinton 17 percent each, with almost 8 percent going to New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and just less than 16 percent undecided.

Al Gore wasn’t listed, so some wards and precincts counted him separately and some just counted votes for him as undecided. He polled best in Ward 2, where he managed more than 6 percent and Ward 3, where he topped 5 percent.

One of the candidates pulled out a win in all the wards with the undecided votes coming in between 10 and 20 percent in each of the wards.

I’ve used percents because it’s easier to compares apples to apples with percents than with numbers when some wards counted close to 300 attendees and others less than 100.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, Gravel isn’t pronounced like the stuff on roads that aren’t paved. And Mike Gravel is from Alaska.

I would like finer details on Kucinich & resolutions Do you have any ward by ward or precinct by precinct information on resolutions submitted?

How about more detailed information on Richardson & Kucinich?

Is this Ward 7 info or something else:

“John Edwards had an overall low showing, despite what some expected. He bottomed out at under 10 percent and topped at only 22 to become the lead vote-getter in Ward 7. Dennis Kucinich pulled out 14 percent and Obama and Clinton 17 percent each, with almost 8 percent going to New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and just less than 16 percent undecided.”

Because here, Kucinich is supposed to have done 6% overall: http://www.stpauldfl.org/

I would like reposrt from caucus-goers about which presidential campaigns they encountered – I notice Obam’s table set up early and smartly at Ward 1′s location (Rondo), where they did best, and Richardson signs going in at or after 7PM. I wonder if there were Kucinich signs up at the caucus site he did best at…

Answers 1. No, don’t have ward by ward or precinct information on resolutions yet. I’ll get that up once I know. It’ll likely be after the wards have there pre-convention meetings to set up committees.

2. I’ll work on putting up a ward by ward break down of the precincts. (Likely tomorrow.)

3. Sorry that was confusing.  That paragraph is for 7 because it stood out a bit with the numbers.

4. As far as who was at the caucuses I can’t give you info for all the wards (I was only at one of the spots for 2 so not super exciting.) I do know that there were a lot of people out stumping, Clinton’s campaign was pretty organized, Edwards wasn’t so much, Richardson was flyering everywhere, Obama had some spontaneous (like caucus goers) speaking and that crazy guy who runs things across the river was out but I didn’t see much lit from him and there weren’t people showing up at all the locations, Kucinich I don’t know I haven’t heard anyone say that there was anything/anyone stumping for him.

Was that all of them? I’ll hope to get the ward by ward up tomorrow morning so be sure to check back!
