Wednesday, March 14, 2007 at 12:14 am
An email sent by U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., may violate federal law and House Rules.
The email from Bachmann’s press secretary, Heidi Frederickson, was published on the weblog Dump Michele Bachmann. It had been sent from Frederickson’s government account.
The email told constituents that “Michele has been the focus of lots of media lately and most of it not friendly.” The letter went on to ask constituents to “take just a moment of your time to write 50

Nice Great work, Jeff.
I figured it would be quasi-legal, but this certainly changes things.
Again, great work.

I’m SHOCKED that Michele Bachmann would abuse her office This should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with Bachmann’s ways. When she was in the state Senate, she was slapped down by her colleagues for using the Senate chambers as a backdrop for a commercial video she made for a right-wing video production company. In Washington County, she was called out for illegally using her adopt-a-highway signs to promoter her state Senate office (the signs had to be changed . She has been caught billing the taxpayers through her Senate office for her home cable tv bills. She tried to bill her state Senate campaign for her congressional campaign expenses in 2005–until she was caught. When it comes to abusing the privileges of public office, Michele Bachmann is the queen. This is the most unethical politician Minnesota has seen in a long time and she needs to be hammered for this latest transgression.

Wellllllll It seems to me that she is asking for constituants who support her repulsive positions to write LTTEs. While I do not support this toad, I will defend to the death her right to ask others to support her.
Why is her request for LTTEs classified as “campaigning”?

Marching Orders As I read it, the objection is not so much to Rep. Bachmann asking for support, it is to her use of congressional resources (the frank–free communication resources) to do so. She is free to use her own resources to whip the faithful into whatever frenzy she wants. Congressional staff, offices, equipment, money, etc. can’t be used to garner support, even if there is no election campaign going on at the moment. I admit, with some congressional releases, it’s hard to say that they are not campaign materials. The line was crossed when there was an explicit request to voice support.
Of course, we must all remember that, when God put you in Congress, the rules don’t apply to you.
