The religious right never goes down without a fight, and given the dwindling chance that their candidates, Sarah Palin and John McCain, can win the White House, they’re taking the fight to extreme new levels. Prominent figures are comparing supporters of Sen. Barack Obama to the Nazis, warning that God will condemn Americans if they don’t vote for McCain, accusing Obama’s family of witchcraft and foretelling a future when Christianity is criminalized by an Obama administration. Are you prepared for Obamageddon?
Perhaps the most controversial essay in the final week of the election season comes from the evangelical news outlet, World Net Daily. Under the screaming headline, “Ex-Hitler youth compares Obama to Nazi rise,” Hilmar von Campe goes on a Godwinesque diatribe:
The Democratic Party, with the leadership of Obama, the Clintons, Reid, Pelosi and comrades, is an illegitimate party that is destroying the Constitution – which leads to spiritual, political and economic disaster. It is illegitimate because of policy principles like abortion and also Darwinism being taught in schools.
Having grown up in the godless totalitarian Nazi society, it is appalling for me to watch that in America, politicians can speak of their “Christian faith” and at the same time make abortion, same-sex marriage and homosexuality their party policy. Democrats are not fit for American constitutional government.
While most examples of Obamageddon where not as extreme, they still prophesy disaster at the hands of God if McCain is not president.
Charisma, a magazine targeted at Pentecostals, recently endorsed McCain saying, “[I]f Sen. Barack Obama is elected, life as we know it in many ways will end… [W]e must pray and work — before it’s too late — to see that Obama is not elected.”
Religious right and political gadlfy Gary Bauer subtly warned that an Obama presidency meant that “God could take his hand of protection off of America.” Terrorist attacks and economic ruin would be God’s punishment on the nation.
James Dobson of Focus on the Family, never one to be outdone for over-the-top theocratic zeal, put out a 16-page “fictional” guide to what will happen to America by 2012 if Obama is elected (PDF). Here are a few excerpts:
The Boy Scouts no longer exist as an organization. They chose to disband rather than be forced to obey the Supreme Court decision that they would have to hire homosexual scoutmasters and allow them to sleep in tents with young boys.
Tens of thousands of Christian teachers either quit or were fired, and there are hardly any evangelical teachers in public schools any more.
The Bible can no longer be freely preached over radio or television stations when the subject matter includes such “offensive” doctrines as homosexual conduct or the claim that people will go to hell if they do not believe in Jesus Christ.
[T]elevision programs at all hours of the day now contain explicit portrayals of sexual acts.
Since 2009 terrorist bombs have exploded in two large and two small U.S. cities, killing hundreds, and the entire country is now fearful, for no place seems safe. President Obama in each case has vowed “to pursue and arrest and prosecute those responsible,” but no arrests have yet been made.
When did this all start? Christians share a lot of the blame. In 2008 many evangelicals thought that Senator Obama was an opportunity for a “change,” and they voted for him. They simply did not realize Obama’s far-left agenda would take away many of our freedoms as a nation, perhaps permanently. Christians did not realize that by electing Barack Obama, the most liberal member ever to serve in the U.S. Senate, they would allow the law, in the hands of a liberal Congress and Supreme Court, to become a great instrument of oppression.
ValuesVotersUsa.com, a consortium of religious right entities, released this video to persuade Christian voters that their own economic self-interest must take a backseat to abortion and homosexuality at the polls this year.
“The purpose of the video is to demonstrate there are more concerning issues at stake during this election other than gas prices and the economy,” read the introduction to pastors who might wish to show this video to their congregations:
Perhaps one of the most curious accusation in the final days of the election comes from Jim Bramlett, who has worked for religious right powerhouses including Pat Robertson and the Campus Crusade for Christ. He claims to have found “evidence” that Obama’s relatives put a curse on McCain and Palin, and that’s why the Republicans are down in the polls:
Dear friends:
THIS IS EXTREMELY SERIOUS.
Minutes ago I spoke with friend Dr. Norman G. Marvin, M.D. and he is so concerned at what he has learned about Barack Obama’s family in Kenya that he is calling a special prayer meeting in his home to pray against the witchcraft curses attempted by them against John McCain and Sarah Palin.
Dr. Marvin sent me the below e-mail from Flo Ellers. Flo is credentialed with the International Fellowship of Ministries which is based in Washington State. She is also a member of EndTime Handmaidens and Servants of Jasper, Arkansas.
IF YOU KNOW HOW TO DO SPIRITUAL WARFARE, PLEASE PRAY TODAY AND CONTINUALLY THAT ALL SUCH CURSES BE BROKEN AND SATAN’S PLAN FOR AMERICA BE DEFEATED, IN JESUS’ NAME. PRAY AND COVER MCCAIN AND PALIN WITH THE BLOOD OF CHRIST. IF YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW TO DO SPIRITUAL WARFARE, IT IS TIME YOU LEARN!!!
Jim
And do-it-yourself religious righties are creating their own bizarre campaigns. South Carolina journalist Linda Hansen documents a series of e-mails making the rounds in the South.
“In a world that’s rushing toward the end times prophecy, God will bless the true Christian leader, if we choose wisely. The Prince of Darkness’ blood runs through the veins of the evildoer…Vote for McCain…Always remember one thing — GOD WILL HAVE THE LAST WORD.”
“God is not schizophrenic, he would not tell one person to vote for Obama and another to vote for McCain…For all my friends who are voting for Obama, can you really look God in the face and say; Father, based on your works I am voting for Obama even though…abortion…liberal judges making laws that are against you…homosexual rights, even though you destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for this.”
The religious right is already gearing up for the massive culture war sure to come with an Obama presidency. Bill Donahue of the Catholic League told Reuters on Sunday, “I’ve been on the phone the last couple of days with some of my friends … and we’re getting ready for the biggest culture war battles ever.”
The Southern Baptist Convention agreed. “An Obama victory will galvanize social conservatives for 2010 and 2012 and they will look for a standard bearer they can rally around,” said Richard Land, who runs the public policy wing of the SBC.
That standard bearer will be Sarah Palin, says Lund. And for good reason. Palin told James Dobson last week that she is sure that God will do the right thing and put her and McCain in the White House. “And it also strengthens my faith because I know at the end of the day putting this in God’s hands, the right thing for America will be done, at the end of the day on Nov. 4,” she said.

It’s such a pity that we can’t put all fanatics (of whatever stripe) together and let them rave at one another and so leave us moderates to vote for whom we please

As the Republican Party splits apart at its weak seams, extreme religious fanatics like the ones mentioned above will be the only ones left. The ugliness and hatred towards others that has pervaded their party for so long is now exposed for all the world to see. They should all move to one of Sarah Palin’s islands where they can create the theocracy they’ve tried to make the White House into, and can ruminate on Russian culture from the insight they gain from viewing the Siberian arctic from their back porches.

The desperate, misguided, and self-seeking are led astray by money seeking harlots like Joel Ostein, Pat Roberson, Jim Baker et al = evangelicals, = evil angels = anti-christ.
ALAMO
Evangelist and convicted tax evader Tony Alamo says the age of consent is puberty and there’s a mandate in the Bible for girls marrying young.
“In the Bible it happened. But girls today, I don’t marry ‘em if they want to at 14-15 years old,” Alamo said Saturday after federal agents raided his southwestern Arkansas compound and placed six girls into state custody. “We won’t do it, even though I believe it’s OK.”
But authorities don’t believe it’s OK _ and now Alamo faces charges he transported children across state lines for sexual activities, in violation of the Mann Act.
HAGGARD
Saying that he was a “deceiver and liar” who had given in to his dark side, the Rev. Ted Haggard confessed to sexual immorality in a letter read from the pulpit of the megachurch he founded.
The president of the National Evangelical Association, which represents 30 million evangelical Christians, apologized and said “The fact is I am guilty of sexual immorality. I am a deceiver and a liar.”
Haggard, 50, held sway in Washington and condemned homosexuality, after a man claimed to have had drug-fueled homosexual trysts with him.
BAKKERS
Jim Bakker, the slight, shy son of a factory worker, went on to use his microphone to preach rather than to sing. He moved south and, with his wife, Tammy Faye, parlayed their natural telegenic innocence into a Christian broadcasting empire that eventually reached 13 million viewers a day, brought in $129 million in revenues and helped build Heritage USA, a 2,500-acre Christian resort near Fort Mill, S.C.
But in the last two months, much that the Bakkers created has come crashing about them, the result of financial and sexual scandals that forced them to flee their ministry and take refuge behind the walls of their $600,000 mansion in Palm Springs, Calif.
In the latest chapter, officials of Mr. Bakker’s former ministry, PTL, disclosed today that a total of $92 million in revenues could not be accounted for and that the ministry’s operations were near financial collapse.
ROBERTSON
Pat Robertson is a wealthy man. An extremely wealthy man-some estimates put his net worth at 140 million.
He lives on the top of a Virginia mountain, in a huge mansion with a private airstrip.
He owns the Ice Capades, a small hotel, diamond mines, and until recently, International Family Entertainment, parent company of the Family Channel.
How does a televangelist, who is supposedly involved in non-profit work, manage to create such a fortune for himself? Apparently, between dealing with murderous dictators and ripping off senior citizens, it’s not that hard.
With his ill-gained fortune now in place, Pat experimented with a number of new businesses, the most interesting among them being American Benefits Plus/Kalo Vita. This was a multi-level marketing scheme along the lines of Amway and Avon.
Here, Robertson recruited people across the country (starting in ‘91-’92), as many as 20,000 people (many of them retirees) to sell coupon books. He told them in training seminars that his program was backed by the Bible, and that they could earn $15,000-$20,000 a month. Things didn’t go that well with the coupon books, though, and Pat suddenly decide to change the company into Kalo Vita, and sell vitamins. Problem was, this left people with coupon books unsold, and when they tried to send the books back to AFB/Kalo Vita, they found out that they would not be refunded their money. One 76 year-old woman in in Indianapolis was stuck with $7,000 worth of unsold coupon books, and had to refinance her home. During the subsequent investigation, it was found that CBN had “loaned” money to AFB during its founding, almost 3 million dollars.
YES, these men sound like followers of a religious leader who said to sell all you own and give it to the poor, love your neighbor as yourself.
You have been told in the New Testament what would happen. Paul spoke of it as did the Messiah.
“They come in my name, but I do not know them.”
THEY SHOULD HAVE THEIR TAX FREE STATUS DENIED. THEIR TRUE INTERESTS ARE IN AMASSING FORTUNES FOR THEMSELVES BY EXPLOITING THE WEAK HEADED OR SELF-SEEKING. THAT IS THE REASON THEY FEAR DEMOCRATS WHO MAY RAISE TAXES ON THEIR WEALTH HORDING WAYS. THESE PEOPLE DON’T RAISE MONEY TO HELP THE POOR.
In their created religions, they offer a cheap interpretation of scripture promising salvations for godlessness as if the door was wide open, rather than a narrow gate; just one simple example of their blasphemy. Their lives are enough to convince you that they are anything but Christian. Their followers simply prefer blindness to truth in a self-seeking, self-glorifying pretence of worshiping God rather than honoring God in all truth. They live in all godlessness deceived and believing their own wants and ideas are sanctioned by God, they know him not.
Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name? Did we not drive out demons in your name? Did we not do mighty deeds in your name?’ Then I will declare to them solemnly, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, you evildoers.’ (Matt 7: 22-23)

As an evangelical Christian and a Republican, I am saddened and embarrassed by examples like these. Please don’t judge all of us by those yelling the loudest. They do not represent me, my beliefs or the vast majority of Christians I know.

Matt G,
Well I wish you wouldn’t let that faction control your party. Because I want to like republicans, but it’s hard to like someone who calls me un-American and tells me everything I like is wrong. Maybe you could help steer your party back toward their original purpose — small government, states rights, and land and animal conservation. Stop allowing religion to hijack your party.

Matt G, it might be hard to break a long affiliation, but the Democratic Party really is a big tent. Yes, it’s more open to secularists, but that’s not because it’s for the non-religious only, but because it’s just more open. There are plenty of Christian liberals around. They’;re generally Christians who’ve learned that Muslims, Jews, Pagans and non-believers are nothing to be afraid of.

I did a keyword search in Dobson’s PDF for “homosexual”. It was mentioned 38 times. In a 16 page document. I’m not kidding. Fundamentalists must think about homosexuality more than homosexuals.

I know that to the non spiritual the truely spiritual always seem crazy. It is because they operate on different spiritual levels.
Not to say that the individuals that are being discussed are truely spiritual but the concept remains the same.
Let’s make up an imaginary example.
Ok, someone who prays for God realization and meditates for hours a day. Who listens inwardly to Holy Spirit and who’s every action is done in the name of and with recognition of the presence of the Father.
Versus another who’s every action is toward sensual fulfillment. Who perhaps drinks, smokes, fornicates, and tries to satiate every lust of the mind.
If the truely spiritual person was to suggest to the truely indulgent person to make positive changes it would fall on deaf ears. The suggestion wouldn’t even be considered. The differences wouldn’t allow for true communication. The indulgent person couldn’t possible understand anything the higher spiritual level person said. It would seem like so much crazy talk.
This is common. It’s actually impossible to communicate a non mental reality such as true spiritualism to someone who has never moved past the fulfillment of the ego and animal urges.
To me, I don’t agree with channeling the power of the Father toward lower world outcomes. That said, if those that feel differently or know not what they do are working their sorcerous black energy against McCain and Pailin perhaps protection is warranted.
Perhaps I will bend just a little. It’s unfortunate that individuals would stoop to making such action necessary. I had truely been avoiding this.
I have a suggestion for anyone who thinks that all talk of religious spiritualism is crazy.
I say this knowing full well that you’re thinking that I’m absolutely crazy. Know that I absolutely don’t care.
I want you to pick a quiet time. To sit comfortably in a dim room. To close your eyes and inwardly chant to yourself the name of the diety of your birth. Do this until your mind quiets and your hear the inner sounds. Even if it takes a long time or multile attempts. Then learn to listen to this inner sound without incessantly talking to yourself in your head. Once you learn to do this and practice it and experience it come back and tell me how crazy spiritualism is.
If you can’t commit to doing this perhaps you shouldn’t judge those that can.

Geee,I thought that these wing-nuts were all looking forward to Armageddon? One would think that they would enbrace the opportunity. Interesting how they try to spin things in whatever direction that they want it to go.

Well, Matt G., you can’t have it both ways. Wearing the Republican label and giving your name to that party means that you endorse it. It means that nothing it stands for, or has said or done, repels you enough as a man and as a Christian to divorce yourself from it. As long as you’re willing to call yourself a Republican, you are responsible for what it is and does. As long as you call yourself a Christian, you are responsible for ensuring that the word “Christian” means what it ought to mean, not what the Far Right has portrayed it to mean. The majority of you who claim to be “evangelical Christians but not like them” have sat quietly by while they’ve co-opted everything you say you stand for. So now they own you. And when we hear the words “Republican” and “Christian,” we hear hate, liars, and ignoramuses. Why? Because we’ve been taught to, by GOP “Christians.”
That’s what they’ve achieved in the 30 years it has taken them to move from lunatic fringe to control of the GOP.
You can’t have it both ways, baby. If you don’t approve, don’t register as a Republican, don’t vote Republican, and don’t give your name to a religion that has come to mean the very opposite of what it was intended to be.

“But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him. For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life. And who is equal to such a task? Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, like men sent from God.” (2 Cor 2:12-17)
This explains perfectly you peoples’ seething hatred for Christians and God’s Law, and your false claims to be Christians yourselves (some of you…like Obama himself). As Obama has now won the election, I pray that as his and his cohorts’ plans for this country unfold, at least some of you will see the wickedness of their ways and truly turn away in repentance, and towards the Truth that is Christ Jesus. May God have mercy of this once great nation…
