You can lead a reporter to a story but you can't make him (or her) write it The goal is to get reporters and producers that cover subjects like school vouchers, Social Security privatization, or faith-based initiatives, to follow the money trail and paint a more complete picture of who's behind the various policy proposals, which are often inaccurately portrayed in the media as being grass roots in nature.

That would mean reporters would have to do more than harvest a bunch of dollar amounts from an FEC report or lobbying report and wrap a paragraph of copy around them. They don't even do that much anymore--they just wait until some other organizatrion does it for them and then regurgitate the press release.

That would mean they'd have to analyze not only how much money is given or taken, but by whom on either end. And that would mean pissing off some of their pals, er, subjects, I mean, sources.

And what few real reporters are left out there are getting squeezed by corporate media buyouts that suck the lifeblood out of news budgets--particularly expensive investigative news budgets--and beef up lifestyle, sports, and yes, "synergy" budgets instead.

Not So Swift Swiftee, quit giving “fisking” a bad name. At its best if involves scrupulous fact-checking, at its worst it just catatonically repeats a boogeyman mantra like “George Soros.” That's no way to win an argument.

Put me down for $100.00 That ought to be enough to make a start on unraveling the cryptoclastic paths that a dollar makes from George Soros's pocket to sites like MediaMatters and, oh say, Minnesota Monitor.

Of course it's going to cost plenty more to get the Soros's whole "De-Nazification" plan laid out, but it will be easier to hit people up for contributions when there is something of interest to show them.

Let me know when the first draft is ready and I'll get that check in the mail.
