Sara Reller has the lowdown on the results of Saturday’s St. Paul DFL Ward conventions. Youth and a progressive approach were the real winners on the day: Pakou Hang battled entrenched incumbent Don Bostrom to a no-endorsement standstill in Ward 6, and Melvin Carter won an overwhelming first-ballot victory over Debbie Montgomery in Ward 1. Both Hang and Carter are recent graduates of Camp Wellstone.
However, Montgomery might have done better had her floor team not walked out on her. Reports from the convention indicate that one of her top staffers left the convention very early, saying he was taking his team with him and wouldn’t work with a candidate who consulted directly with Republicans.
Ouch.
