State construction bonding bill first to fall to Pawlenty’s rapier pen

VetoNot even employing the line item veto, Gov. Tim Pawlenty threw the entire state construction projects bonding bill back to the Minnesota Legislature, saying, in essence, “Make it closer to my way or there ain’t gonna be any bucks for highways” and college buildings and flood mitigation and veterans’ affairs and agriculture programs and….

Dealing with the willful child The governor has made his positions clear as day since day 1 of the legislative session…he will veto excess spending and he will veto tax increases.

The DFL chose to completely ignore him, and have not made any efforts to meet him even half-way.

Reporters have been asking Democrat legislators the same question since they introduced the first tax increase and pork bill: “The governor has promised to veto tax increases and pork barrel spending bills, what is your back-up plan?”

The response was uniformly the same “We’re counting on the governor to change his mind…(maybe he’s just kidding).”

The DFL chose to completely ignore him, and have not made any efforts to meet him even half-way.

If “bucks for highways and college buildings and flood mitigation and veterans’ affairs and agriculture programs and….” were more important than playing games to the Democrat party, they would have met with the governor and his staff or at least met him half way.

The DFL chose to completely ignore him, and have not made any efforts to meet him even half-way.

So now, like a child that has been told 50 times not to touch the vase or he will get his hand slapped, the DFL stands there with shining eyes and a slapped hand whining “You’re mean!”…while they are simultainously reaching for the vase again.

Sometimes it takes the willful child awhile to learn a lesson;
gonna be some really sore hands in Democrat land by the end of the month..

Half-Way It’s completely true that Uncle Timmy threatened to veto anything resembling a tax increase.  However, he also stated during his reelection campaign that he did not feel beholden to his “No new taxes” pledge he made to the Taxpayers League during his first term and that he would work with Dems in a more cooperative manner if he was reelected to ensure that he business of the state gets done.  His remarks regarding the budget legislation he will be seeing this session seems to indicate that he wasn’t serious about those commitments.  Doesn’t the Governor have just as much responsibility to help find the middle ground?
