University of Minnesota Senate Endorses Dream Act
Sunday, May 06, 2007 at 12:34 pm
The University of Minnesota Senate, which comprises of faculty, students and staff from all of its four campuses, supported the Dream Act, a legislation that would allow children of undocumented immigrants in the state to pay in-state tuition for their higher education.
Along with university President Robert Bruininks, the powerful group unanimously passed early this week a motion supporting the enactment of the Dream Act.
The legislation passed the state Senate, but Gov. Tim Pawlenty threatened to veto it.
Pro-immigrants rights groups celebrated the university’s move as a pivotal support at a time when thousands of undocumented students are unable to attend colleges because of an expensive tuition.
