Strib Update: New Editor Rumored to Be Coming from Pioneer Press

** Update: On May 9, the Star Tribune named Christine Ledbetter, a features editor at the Chicago Sun-Times, as assistant managing editor for features.**
A rumor keeps resurfacing in both the Pioneer Press and Star Tribune newsrooms: Management will announce the naming of an assistant managing editor for features, and — wait for it — not only will that person be hired from outside the Minneapolis paper, but he or she will come from the Pioneer Press.
The move, if true, would be remarkable given the lawsuit over, among other issues, the attempted poaching of staff by former PiPress publisher Par Ridder, who now works for the Strib. Plus the hiring of more management while reporters are expected to be cut — and following March buyouts that reduced the newsroom staff by 24 — portends the continued decline of local news coverage.
Stating that today’s meeting with management “promises to be ugly,” Strib columnist Doug Grow said that Friday’s revelation that columnists have been asked to give up columns is “going to be pretty small compared to what’s going to be happening to the paper as a whole.”
Grow, unlike Quirk columnist James Lileks, may be keeping his metro column, but regardless, he’ll stay at the paper.
“For all sorts of reasons, I plan to stay for a couple of more years, though that may mean covering high school football games in Apple Valley,” he said.

If true…. Par Ridder is either really confident he’s going to win the suit, or the stupidest person on the planet.
I’d lean toward the latter.

Negative? Moi? No, just pointing out that when you’re engaged in a lawsuit for stealing the PiPress’ people and trade secrets, it may not be a great idea to steal more of the PiPress’ people.
