Comment on The Bridges: Looks More Like Orlando Than Paris

A small crowd gathered Monday night for the first of six meetings set up by the WSCO about the Bridges of St. Paul project in the planned Community Engagement Schedule. The city staff presentation was mostly a rehash of planning documents that affect the area, and developer Jerry Trooien’s information was pulled mostly from the forums he recently hosted.

The attendees, who were more casual and less favorable to Trooien’s JLT firm, asked about traffic, public space, tax-increment financing and the West Side Flats Master Plan. One questioner commented, “What is being proposed is not like Paris; it’s much more Orlando — a theme park.”

While a few of the attendees’ questions were answered,  WSCO members postponed serious back-and-forth discussion until a promised future date — details for which haven’t been announced.

City planner Lucy Thompson spoke about each of the plans for the area and handed out copies of many of them. (Many city plans can be found here.)

The next meetings will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. May 15, 21 and 29, and June 4 and 12 at the Wellstone Center .

Our-Lando Obviously this person has never been to Orlando. There are tons of visitors and cash flowing out the wa-zoo!

I think that the Bridges has a lot to offer since what currently sits in the area looks a bit more like East L.A.  I wonder if all the activists in town will stick with Saint Paul while it crumblkes under this “no, never” mentality.

Out? Wouldn’t it be bad it cash was flowing out? Wouldn’t you want cash flowing in? That sounds pretty uncomfortable though.

I am trying to get some photos of the site so people can see what it looks like now but unfortunately I’m a poor photographer with horrible equipment. Hopefully in the next story we’ll have an image or two of the site as it currently is.
