If I were in Beattie’s shoes, I would hope that someone would care enough about me to do the same for me. It’s a pity that Beattie didn’t have such a person.

Transgender people are not mutilated, and they have not necessarily had some sort of tragedy occur in their childhood to make them decide to transition.

The best layman’s terms that we can use to describe it, using the best science that technology can offer us in this day and age, is this: A person’s gender is developed in two very distinct ways– both in a physical stature and an mental one. Diagram:

People who are not transgender have a parallel flow between the two. A man will develop both physically as a man and mentally as a man. Ditto with a woman.

Many transgender people feel a disconnect. While the body may develop into womanhood, the mind develops into manhood, or vice verse. (This is a feeling that we, as nonTrans people, will never understand fully.) The person grows up with this disconnect, feeling unattached to the physical body and confused. We live in a society which teaches us that genitalia determines gender, so many transgender people spend years attempting to make the inside match the outside.

The mind, however, is a powerful thing. And for many transgender people, a time comes when it becomes easier to change the outside to match the inner. Avoiding this realization is dangerous– It makes people hate themselves, their bodies– it causes severe depression, suicide. For many transgender people, the choice is simple: transition or die.

I know that it is hard to understand, being someone who is not transgender yourself. But, before you use harsh words like “mutilate” and attempt to invalidate the personhood of Beattie (or any other transgender person)… try, at least, to put yourself in his shoes. To understand what it must have been like to feel so disconnected. Just try before you judge.

I feel terribly sorry for Beattie. She is an obviously deeply disturbed woman that was abused by a disgrace to the medical profession and failed by a society that has become so cowed it was unable to provide the help she really needed.

She needed a psychiatrist, not Dr. Frankenstein.

And you are doing her no favor by describing her as a “man who is pregnant”. Men are incapable of becoming pregnant (God, I can’t believe that I have to point that out); despite the despicable mutilation that has been done to her, Beattie is still a woman.

I just hope that she has someone that can care for that poor child.
