The Autopia blog at Wired magazine’s Web site favors Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak for secretary of transportation in the new Obama administration. In an article titled, “Obama’s Transportation Secretary Must Be a Visionary,” Wired opines:

[T]he best guy for the job may well be R.T. Rybak, the forward-thinking mayor of Minneapolis. He’s made sensible and sustainable transportation policy a hallmark of his tenure. … His is exactly the kind of proactive, big-picture thinking we need if we are to address our nation’s infrastructure problems and begin moving us toward smarter growth.

Wired credits Rybak with planning for streetcars, “robust” pedestrian policy, doubling the number of cyclists and even downtown’s residential turnaround — everything short of throwing himself bodily into a mass of consitutents to receive their adjulation and arms-aloft support. Wait — Wired’s endorsement gives Rybak props for his now-legendary crowd-surfing antics at the First Avenue nightclub.
