Flight Cancellations Back at Northwest Airlines

Pilots shortages and an unexpected spike in fleet maintenance caused major flight cancellations at Northwest Airlines over the weekend, the airline said.

The Eagan-based carrier canceled about 110 flights over the weekend, according to Minnesota Public Radio. At its height, the airline canceled more than 1,000 flights in mid-June.

The Star Tribune quoted CEO Doug Steenland that the carrier will reduce its flight capacity by 4 percent in August while it recalls pilots.

During the next year, the airline is expected to hire about 350 pilots to keep up with the demand, and to shorten flight hours for current pilots.

Since it emerged from bankruptcy in early June, Northwest has had a rocky relationship with its pilots, flight attendants and other union members, who on various occasions issued a “no-confidence vote.”

Northwest Boarding Gate attendants told lies – read more Our flight out of Laguardia on Friday night at 6:50 p.m. to Indianapolis was cancelled, as were the majority of NWA flights from this location.  The attendants at the gate said it was “due to weather”.  No compensation was offerred. No hotel rooms – free flights, etc.  The said that because the cancellations were due to weather no compensation would be offered.  They did reschedule connections for Saturday, Taking American to Chicago – then on to Minneapolis – then change back to NWA for Indy.  Got in at 8:30 p.m.on Saturday.  Oh, quess what – my luggage went to Memphis – then Phoenix.  NWA said it would be back at Indy on Saturday night by 9 p.m. then deliverd to my house that night.  At 7:00 a.m. Sunday, it still had not arrived.  I called NWA and they said the courier would pick it up at 10:00 a.m. and had 8 hours to get it to me.  It showed up in Columbus, IN at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday – and yes – my brand new first flight luggage had been damaged. The courier said “call NWA, I work for the Airport.”

So – any help on where to go or who to contact for compensation would be appreciated. I am writing a letter to NWA and the National Transportation Board.

Other that that I had a great time in NYC…..
