Bridge Hero Says ‘Nope’ to Bush Photo-Op

Hernandez declines Bush photo: Somebody who saves 50 kids from a school bus teetering on the edge of a collapsed highway is a bona fide hero, and Jeremy Hernandez deserves the media attention — and the $15,000 scholarship he’s being offered to finish his automotive repair program at Dunwoody College of Technology. But it seems he draws the line somewhere, according to Molly Schwartz, communications director for Pillsbury United Communities, where Hernandez works as a gym coordinator. When asked by a White House staffer to appear in a presidential photo op, Schwartz told the New York Times, his answer was simple: “He was just, like, ‘Nope.’” He decided to go fishing in Northern Minnesota instead.

35W papers auctioned on eBay: One place where newspapers are selling — if not on the newsrack — is on eBay, where papers reporting Barry Bonds’ historic 756th home run Tuesday night are picking up bids. But a bit more ghoulish are the entrepreneurs trying to sell the Aug. 2 editions of the Star Tribune and Pioneer Press featuring the 35W collapse stories. One has a starting bid of a dollar (plus $4 shipping) for a copy of the Strib; it hasn’t received a single bid. Another seller, apparently aiming to be positively affected by the tragedy, includes an image of a flower and the italicized text, “Heartfelt wishes to all who have been negatively affected by this tragedy.” Full editions of both dailies have a buy-it-now price of $19.99, but don’t bother trying: in comments, the seller says he/she will only sell to people who “live out of state and desire what is being offered.”

Ridder on “benchmarking”: Editor & Publisher, in its first of a series of testimony excerpts from Par Ridder’s trial in June, releases a partial transcript of Ridder discussing how publishers routinely share advertising information to “benchmark” their progress.

Dunwoody Hey, thanks for the item on Jeremy. For the record, we aren’t Dunwoody Institute any longer — haven’t been for several years. It’s Dunwoody College of Technology now.

Rosen’s Sports Sunday – had the scoop on the Bush thing, in an interivew with Mr. Henandez Sunday night. The guy was real low-key about it. Wasn’t waving an anti-W flag or carrying a big peace puppet, though ihs attitude is – going by Mpls percentages – probably not pro-W. The fishing I think had something to do with his cousin’s or brother’s birthday or something.

It was a long interview. Mark sat back and let him talk several times, about the whole experience. It was interesting to see Mark Rosen with genuine awe in his demeanor.

Yes, I didn’t see the Rosen interview, but you make a good point. I didn’t sense from any of what I’ve read or seen about Hernandez that he was making a huge anti-Bush statement. It’s more like he had better things to do…

Good on You I read somewhere that you’ve established a scholarship to help others in a similar circumstance who contribute to the betterment of their community.  I think that’s a wonderful way to not only honor Jeremy by offering to cover his tuition but to ‘pay it forward’.
