In America, We Welcome the Cacaphony The America I grew up in was one where everyone could speak his piece, and we would listen and make up our own minds, either in discussion or at the ballot box.

The onset of "political correctness" has threatened that long standing tradition, much to my dismay. Senator McCarthy did not help things, either. And it does not help that the media is so addicted to "sound bites" which grab only one phrase from someone's articulation of his/her views.

Sometimes it seems to me that that infernal TV remote has made us too willing to just turn off any view we dislike, and it is carrying over into public discourse -- and now even into peace-keeping.

Although in many ways "the good old days" were not so good, in this respect I'd like to see them return.
