Madoff, Palin, Bush, Blagojevich… Bachmann? The Guardian’s Michael Tomasky ranks Minnesota’s 6th Congressional District Rep. Michele Bachmann fifth in “America’s hall of shame.” Her suggestion that journalists should investigate whether Barack Obama and other members of Congress have “anti-American views” — which Tomasky calls “the single most appalling political statement of the year” — merited the mention, naturally. Bachmann earned a higher slot on the list than 2008 luminaries Joe “The Plumber,” Geraldine Ferraro, Dick Cheney and call-girl enthusiast Eliot Spitzer.

Tourism and convention bureaus spend millions selling Minnesota’s attributes to the rest of the world and what do Republicans contribute to the effort? Michele Bachmann, the Larry Craig Memorial Bathroom Stall, and the RNC/Bob Fletcher Thugfest. Around the globe, those three embarrassments have done more than anyone or anything else to taint Minnesota’s image as a place to visit. Way to go!

Doesn’t the shame really belong to the voters of the Sixth District who re-elected her? Loonies are thick on the political ground, but the true lunacy is giving them legitimacy.
