Rep. Bachmann’s statement of support for Israel

In defending her vote in favor of a non-binding resolution in support of Israel and its air and ground strikes against targets in Gaza, Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann today said:

“The current conflict in Gaza has drawn worldwide attention and concern. No one likes to see the destruction, the loss of life, the grief. But, Israel was pushed into a corner with no other option than to defend and protect its people. Now, it is time that Congress put its words into action and stand strong behind our most valuable ally, Israel.

“The extremist views that support terrorism and violence are the biggest threat to both our nations. Terrorist organizations like Hamas and the Islamic Jihad actively foster violence and hinder the peace process in the Mideast. These acts endanger the entire global community, most of all the peace-loving people who live in the Middle East. These are not only Israelis, but also Palestinians. They deserve a chance for a peaceful life and a future for their children. Terrorists work to block such chances.

“The people of Israel have been victims of violence and hatred for far too long. It is imperative that the leaders of America do everything in their power to foster an environment with the Middle East that promotes peace and understanding. The future of America and Israel depend on it.”

The measure passed 390 to 5, with 22 representatives, including Minnesota’s Betty McCollum and Keith Ellison voting “present.”

Well, good for her. Not so good for McCollum — or Keith Ellison, who also voted “present.”

Israel was pushed into a corner? Really? How about Israel has been pushing Palestinians into a corner with their illegal occupations and settlements for years. And wasn’t Hamas elected in democratic elections with the U.S.’s full support? But then, history doesn’t matter much when you’re only in it for Armageddon.

Good for McCollum and Ellison. The rest of the delegation is giving AIPAC a return on their investment.

How can Bachmann and other representatives tell a group of people that the people they elected to represent them are “terrorists”!!! what are terriosts?? and how are you a terriosts if your weak and under occupation for 65 years …????? Hamas was elected because of it’s wellingness to stand up to isreal and america goverments not because it wants to kill people … islamic thoughts unite and impower muslims and that’s the only threats a islamic organization imposses and that’s a western fear muslims uniting!!! …. all i have to say every nation will have it’s day to stand for it’s self and the palesteinan peoples will have theirs soon!!! Creulity only leads to more cruelity and isreal thinks it can just do whatever it wants and people like bachmann stand behind them lets just hope they don’t turn on america with all this power were giving them !!!

“Backed into a corner”? Rep Bachmann has it all wrong. It is Gaza who is confined in a concentration camp with walls and guard towers surrounding them. It is the Palestinians who are not allowed freedom to leave this concentration camp to work in their fields, go to school or to go to a hospital (with equipment and supplies). It is the Palestinians who have had their borders blockaded from receiving food, medical supplies or even paper. This is just a miniscule example of what israel has inflicted on these captive people, yet they are not allowed to get attention by lobbing their firecrackers, that have not hurt anyone for over 2 years until israel’s invasion. The state that “endangers the entire global community”, is israel not Gaza and its confined, starving and barely armed people. The leaders of israel stated when they first blockaded Gaza, “we will put them on a diet”, they said this while laughing, these are who my tax money supports to the tune of billions yearly. My government does not represent me in this issue.

Mary, you should be under one of those “firecrackers.” It would blow off more than your wig.

Mary, If you were under one of those firecrackers, it would blow off more than your wig–don’t mean to suggest you should be under rocket bombardment–just that the rockets shot from Gaza are hardly as benign as you think.
