Gov. Tim Pawlenty told MSNBC on Monday that Republicans need to allow President Barack Obama to carry out his agenda, particularly with regard to fixing the economy.

“We need to give him a lot of latitude,” Pawlenty said. “He wants to be forward-looking, forward-leaning, and we should give him some space in that regard.”

Pawlenty and his wife, Mary, are in Washington, D.C., for the inauguration. To Republican leaders attending the event he said, “It sends a message: Hey, look, we’re in this together.”

“It’s important for all of us to come together, whether Republican or Democrat,” he said.

He’s probably at the inauguration to measure the drapes for his inevitable march to the White House. Besides, being in Washington means he doesn’t have to be in Minnesota working on the severe problems of the state. Any time Pawlenty can get on a plane, he’s happy as a clam. Buckle down and put in a sustained effort on a Minnesota problem? Not so much.
