Former Sen. Norm Coleman — who on Nov. 5 said he’d “step back” if he had fewer votes than Al Franken, but later backtracked, calling the utterance “a mistake” — is running a web video calling out what he sees as a contradiction by Franken. Using quotes from Franken campaign advocates and footage from an earlier Franken clip, Coleman’s video, created in support of his lawsuit seeking the review of 12,000 rejected absentee ballots, claims that Franken doesn’t want every vote counted.
An interesting note: While the Coleman campaign doesn’t consider video news outlet The UpTake “legitimate” media — the campaign has repeatedly barred the group from campaign pressers and the GOP tagged them a “partisan liberal video blog” — they will use The UpTake’s video when it serves their purposes (note UpTake logo in the image above). Nationally, left-leaning TalkingPointsMemo shares the honor: Coleman’s video includes their logo, too.

There’s a different between every vote being counted and every legal vote counted. Al Franken fought for every single legal vote to be counted. Norm Coleman is trying to get any vote, legal or not, to be counted.

Coleman would like this requested review to be considered the first review of these ballots. They were reviewed twice, once when they came in, and again after Franken su8ccessfully made his case that some were rejected in error and should be reviewed a second time — and this is a big pint — over Coleman’s objections.
My take is Coleman isn’t really hoping for another review or thinking that are many more ballots or that those ballots help him. He’s looking for a basis to take the case to federal court where he might hope for a partisan verdict from the conservatives on the federal bench, and hopefully a Bush v. Gore repeat. Al’s strategy has to be less towards winning in state court, and more toward denying Coleman any sort of equal protection violation claim.
