John Charles Wilson announced on Tuesday that he would run for mayor of Minneapolis with the support of his newly founded political party, the Edgertonite National Party. Wilson says part of the reason he is running is to “unseat local officials who condoned police brutality at the [Republican National Convention].” He calls Minneapolis’ current mayor “Raymond Thomas ‘Tear Gas’ Rybak.”
Wilson’s Edgertonite National Party is based on the Lauraist religion, a movement he created that believes Laura Ingalls Wilder is God and that the Lauraist homeland will occupy an area within a 240-mile radius of Minneapolis.
“A new nation, to be called Edgerton, with its capital at Minneapolis, should be created on the land from approximately Hibbing to Des Moines, and from Fargo to Madison,” says Wilson’s campaign Web site.
Communism is the mode of government of said nation, with an abolition of all laws except those necessary for public safety.
Wilson has written two books, “The Principles of Lauraism” and “The Conscience of a Communist.”
Wilson says he was institutionalized in the early 1980s because of his political and religious beliefs.

Institutionalized in the early 1980’s because of his political and religious beliefs? Didn’t crazy factor into it at all?
As much as I dislike the glad handing R.T. Rybak, I’d sooner vote for him than this nut case! I can’t believe that I’m defending the mayor, but to allege that he condoned police brutality at the RNC is not accurate. After all the big talk prior to the RNC regarding supporting his protesting wife, he was clearly no where to be found when the protects finally went down. R.T. might be a phoney, but I don’t believe that he condones police brutality. I think it would be easier to say that he simply doesn’t care.
If this is the best reason he can come up with to unseat Rybak, nothing else he has to say really matters. He does more to insure a successful Rybak re-election than the opposite.

God is God! He is first and foremost. What type of minister is this man? CERTAINLY, he is not a Christian, nor do I believe he is saved. NO MAN would EVER say that any one else is GOD, than GOD, the creator of ALL. This is a lunatic, and is misusing and misleading the beloved author, Laura Ingalls Wilder, whom was a Christian, but was far from being “God”! Did he create this “lauraism” or “lauraist”? One can admire a person’s admiration of Laura, but NO one can say that she or anyone else is GOD. This is rediculous! Abserd! Sounds like this is all a big joke, but IF he is for real, he needs to be institutionalized, and be SAVED!

I am the person you guys are talking about. Thanks for the free campaign publicity
However, I have some points to make:
1) The author of this article misquoted my website. I did not say “all laws should be abolished except for those necessary for public safety” (though I actually like the sentiment). I said “children should have the same rights as adults except where necessary for public safety”.
2) According to the American Heritage Dictionary, “condone” means: To overlook, forgive, or disregard (an offense) without protest or censure. If someone doesn’t care about something, they *are* condoning it. Therefore to say R. T. Rybak didn’t condone police brutality, he just didn’t care, is a contradiction in terms.
3) I am not a Christian nor have I ever claimed to be. I also assert that “God” is a title like “President”, not a name. Even the God most people in this country believe in has a name, commonly rendered in English as “Jehovah”, “Yahweh”, or “Elohim”. I personally believe in Laura, and I believe Laura came in to this world for the purpose of observing the world, therefore She *posed* as a Christian to blend in to her surroundings. I wish to remind you that in America, we (at least on paper) have freedom to worship whomever we wish (or not to) in peace. My faith harms no one.

I made two errors in my last comment that I wish to correct, and I have two more criticisms of other commenters:
First, I misquoted myself when in my last comment I said, “Children should have the same rights as adults except where necessary for public safety.” The quote should have read, “… except where it would endanger public safety.” OOPS!
Second, I now realise the original article’s comment that I seek the abolition of all laws except those necessary for public safety wasn’t intended as a direct quote but a summation of all my comments on personal freedom. Therefore, I shouldn’t have criticised that statement in the first place.
Now, my criticisms of other commenters:
One, the person who claims I wasn’t institutionalised for my political and religious beliefs, but because I am crazy, basis his opinion that I am crazy on my political and religious beliefs. That is circular reasoning at best and self-contradicition at worst.
Second, I doubt my candidacy will help Rybak, considering we have IRV now. At best, it would be neutral for him. Even if my candidacy offends people, they’re no more likely to vote for Rybak than they would be if I didn’t run. Remember. there will be more candidates than just me and him.

Good work, John. No matter what, getting your name published and noticed (and it certainly was) is what counts in a campaign.
Keep it up, dear friend,

I didn’t know it, but damn — growing up worshiping Wilder’s books is the closest thing I’ve come to a religion, no kidding. I think a lot of LIW researchers/historians might say the same. You go — but I think you might have better luck at another Wilder site than in Mpls, maybe try running for mayor of Decorah, Iowa?

Laura Ingels as a prophet is no worse than eating the flesh and blood of an undead zombie.

From the guys website:
“Age of consent laws should be repealed.”
Try to imagine my surprise, a new religion, that just happens to want those pesky age of consent laws repealed. Why is it that nearly all new and old religions have an interest in screwing kids?

“Didn’t crazy factor into it at all?”
No, then every person preaching fundamentalist Christianity would be institutionalized.
“…I believe Laura came in to this world for the purpose of observing the world…”
Actually, this sounds a lot less crazy than a man who creates people imperfect, expects them to live up to his standards, so he makes a deal with himself to sacrifice himself. John, you should have called her a prophet or “God incarnate”.
By the way, Myspace quoter, I could make a myspace for anyone to defame them if I wanted.

I dunno, it doesn’t seem that crazy to me.
At least we can prove that Laura Wilder existed.
If he really feels this connected to someone else’s beliefs
then I don’t think it’s inaccurate to call that person his “prophet”
or his “god”. Personally I think he’s better off worshiping
a decent person than worshipping any number of crazy deities already out there.

So does this make Mansfield, MO; DeSmet, SD; Walnut Grove, MN; etc holy cities in the LIW religion?
