Pret-a-Reporter: WCCO Given UpTake Tees

Tees for two: WCCO’s recent coverage of citizen-videobloggers at The UpTake — which included a blog followup by reporter Jason DeRusha  — featured site co-founder Chuck Olsen in a yellow “I am the media” t-shirt. In a rare moment of MSM/blogosphere goodwill, the UpTake gave DeRusha and Don Shelby each a tee. “Professional journalists always wear neckties,” said DeRusha. “And hold our Emmy awards.”

Best of: My favorite moment of ‘CCO’s coverage was DeRusha’s reply when asked by anchor Amelia Santaniello about citizen journalist’s lack of “formalized training.” DeRusha’s reply: “We don’t have a license to do this either.” Best moment of Chuck Olsen’s behind-the-scenes videoblog on the appearance? DeRusha declaring, “I’m not a newsbot.”

Web worries: Back in ’98, Editor & Publisher surveyed newspapers about their chief concerns, which at the time focused on customer service, delivery problems, and high prices. Some 58 percent of newspaper execs surveyed said they felt the industry had taken “adequate steps” to counter the threat of the Internet. Times — as the saying goes — change. A new Readership Institute study [pdf] finds that today more than half of news industry execs see the web as their biggest competitor. Forty-two percent of managers say that integrating print and online content should be their top priority in the next year. Focus on the internet, writes RI’s Limon Peer, “is correct, but woefully overdue.
