I VotedA proposed bill that would make Minnesota’s voter requirements among the strictest in the nation was voted down in the House State and Local Government Operations Reform, Technology and Elections Committee on Thursday.

The Republican-sponsored bill would have required all Minnesota voters to have photo identification in order to vote. Only three other states have voter requirements that strict. The bill was carried by Reps. Tom Emmer, R-Delano, and former Secretary of State Mary Kiffmeyer, R-Big Lake. Both said the bill was intended to prevent voter fraud.

Secretary of State Mark Ritchie testified before the committee in opposition to the bill, Minnesota Public Radio reported.
