DFL’s Stiles will head St. Paul mayor’s re-election effort

John Stiles will serve as campaign manager for St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman’s re-election campaign. The DFL communications director is stepping down from that post at the end of this month.
“I’m extremely grateful to the DFL Party for offering me the opportunity to serve on a team with such a solid record of success,” Stiles said in a statement announcing the change. “I’m proud of the work that we’ve done to bring change to Minnesota, and I’m especially proud that we retired Norm Coleman and elected Al Franken to the U.S. Senate.
The last boast is certainly debatable, but Stiles will likely face an easier task in guiding Coleman’s campaign. No credible opposition has emerged to challenge the incumbent and he’s widely viewed as a lock for re-election. But he’s also frequently mentioned as a possible gubernatorial candidate in 2010 — a race that would prove much more challenging given the already crowded DFL field.

John and Mayor Coleman are going to have to answer the question that Norm Coleman had to keep dodging in 1997 — “Why should we vote for you when everyone knows you want to be gone 14 months after the election?”
Norm was even buying up billboard space in Duluth for his Mayoral reelection campaign. “Norm Coleman and Saint Paul Go Together” or something along those lines was used far from St. Paul to get the voters associating him with the state capitol. Given that there were no St. Paul city voters outstate, it was a rather ingenious way for him to campaign for a statewide race using the war chest he’d built for his mayoral run.
