Quote of the Day: Coulter, the Earth and UST
Thursday, November 15, 2007 at 7:55 am
The University of St. Thomas‘ campus recycling web page features the quoted wisdom of environmental thinkers and spiritual leaders like Jesus, Wendell Berry, Martin Luther King, the Dalai Lama, Senegalese ecologist Baba Dioum and Aldo Leopold. A curious inclusion:
“God gave us the earth. We have dominion over the plants, the animals, the trees. God said, ‘Earth is yours. Take it. Rape it. It’s yours.’“– Ann Coulter, Fox-TV: Hannity & Colmes, 20 Jun 01

rolling over Ann Coulter in the same list as Jesus? Wow. If jesus actually existed, he’d be rolling over in his grave.
Guess that kind of speaks volumes about the rhetoric some at St. Thomas buy into.

I’m not sure of the spirit in which you offer this post other Paul Although I’m quite sure that justinph is living in Bizarro-land.
On the off-chance that you present as justin takes it – Do you guys spend your days like moles, digging for ways to justify condescension at this vague mass you consider “conservatism?”
Why did you not link to the page, which makes it clear these are a bunch of nice environmentalist enthusiasts running a very serious program? And the quote appears among literally thousands. They’re basically, for the fun of it – remember fun? – gathering almost any kind of environmental quote they can, and there is literally zero reason to assume they agree with Ann Coulter.
Does everyone have to live life making sure they don’t ever do anything that might someday offend someone in the ever more offendable liberal world?

Well, Hi other other Paul,
With only my posts here to go on, I suppose it’s a good question. No, I don’t obsess about finding nasty nuggets on conservatives. I’ll admit though: I think Ann Coulter is a kook. But I posted this, without comment or editorializing, after stumbling upon it looking for details on Coulter’s UST visit. I went to a Catholic college, still go to mass, and have concern for the environment. Given that, it was a surprise to see her words among the dozens (not thousands) of otherwise great — and wise but not particularly “fun” — quotes about ecology. I definitely didn’t intend it as some big commentary on St. Thomas’ recycling program or conservatives (other than Coulter).

Clarification: There are lots of quotes on the UST recycling page. I said there’s dozens, and that’s true for the page I linked to (Stewardship), where there are 151. But it’s part of a larger quotations section that has 1,792. Not quite Paul’s “thousands,” but a lot more than dozens. Also, for context, this main page — which I didn’t see, as I came directly to the Stewardship page via google — has a note stating the excerpts are “presented to encourage global thinking and to provoke thought about our relationship and responsibility as human beings with the earth.”
In this case, including Coulter provoked thought on my part.
