Ethanol Advocates Jam KARE-11 Poll

KARE-11′s recent poll on ethanol “must’ve struck a nerve,” the station reports. The Washington Post revealed that after KARE launched a poll asking consumers what they think about E-85, the American Lung Association and the Renewable Fuels Association sent out an email urging ethanol supporters to jam the poll. Under the subject line “YOUR QUICK VOTE IS NEEDED! – Send KARE11 a message about E85!” the email made its way to the Department of Energy, where it was forwarded on, with the endorsement of Assistant Secretary Alexander Karsner, to some 450 employees and contractors.

The email campaign followed a report on E-85, the fuel made from corn-derived ethanol mixed with 15 percent gasoline, that the American Lung Association called “very biased and inaccurate.” By a 400-vote margin, the top poll response was “Ethanol is not perfect, but is at least an alternative.”

ALA comment At MNspeak, Robert Moffitt of ALA-MN, posts this comment, in response to a question about why the American Lung Association is advocating on E-85′s behalf:

Helping to promote cleaner air (both outdoors and indoors) has been part of our mission for some time, taulpaul. It does have to do with emissions –tailpipe emissions from vehicles are the single largest source of outdoor air pollution in Minnesota. While biofuels are not the perfect solution (no fuel is), and are just one of many things we need to do (like the hybrid buses discussed in this thread), it IS cleaner-burning than gasoline, the fuel most of us are using.

Zero-emission transporation is a goal many are striving for, and one the American Lung Association of Minnesota supports and would welcome. On a practical matter, these solutions are still years away from being ready for the average Minnesotan. Biofuels like E85 and biodiesel are available today, and we encourage their use.

In 1998, the U.S. Dept. of Energy Clean Cities program selected the American Lung Association of Minnesota to lead a pilot program to create a public/private partnership to promote biofuels and to develop alternative fuel infratructure here. Today, Minnesota has more E85 stations than any other state.

Sigh “Not perfect, but at least an alternative”.  Well.  If that is what goes for good enough, I should think up a few other ways to create “energy” miraculously from other sources of energy and call it a “source”.  They seem to not only buy just about anything, but get positively enthusiastic about it.

RE: Ethanol Advocates Jam KARE-11 Poll Yeah Paul,

That was comment on mnspeak was in response to my question earlier in the day.  Bob is always very respectful in answering questions, even if you disagree with some of the American Lung Association’s tactics or scope of mission.
