The UpTake gauges DFL Senate candidates’ support through the precise science of applause at recent debates. Burying the needle on The UpTake-o- Meter Tuesday night was Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer, but UT’s Michael McIntee clarifies that the venue, Minneapolis’ Roosevelt High School, “is Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer’s backyard and ‘Back Jack Pack’ which jammed the auditorium let everyone know that.”

Where are the other backyards? I suppose it’s fair to describe south Minneapolis as “Jack’s backyard.”  He has lived there for years and years, has lots of friends there, goes to church there, does most of his shopping there, even teaches at St. Thomas right across the river from there.

But what about the other candidates?  Where are their “backyards”?  Where would they receive such thunderous applause as Jack did last night?

On some level, it seems that Jack is connecting with voters in a unique way.  It’s worth noticing.
