news from Hennepin Co -

Early Henn Co Returns for CD 5 DFL:

Ellison 10,638
Erlandson 5,960
Reichgott Junge  3,8827:58 pm – Here’s one party we couldn’t get into, Michael Brodkorb liveblogs the Republican Party

7:33 pm – Joe Soucheray gets a little cranky over the St. Paul Republican primary, and makes a declaration:

If I snatch my beloved paper off the stoop this morning only to discover that Shepard beat Sium in the primary I will renounce what passes for a shallow shell of the Republican party in Minnesota. I am not anticipating that Shepard won, but if he did people who call themselves Republicans will be walking under a heavy shroud of shame.

6:52 pm – Paul reports again from the road, this time in ward 3 of the 5th district.  As of 6:30, 320 of the 1565 registered had voted, putting them at the 20% mark as well with well over an hour to go.  KSTP did a story at 6:30 announcing that turnout was only average at about 20-25%.  Considering average is actually 20%, I would say we’re getting pretty near above average numbers.

Kiffmeyer puts out a news release about the election.

6:05 pm -Paul Schmelzer just called to let us know that in ward 1 of the 5th district, 405 votes have been cast out of 2000 registered voters, breaking the 20% average turnout with almost two hours to go.

5:32 pm – Matt has updates on turnout from his time on the street.

The official counts at several polling places in the 5th district reflected average turn out as of 2 PM this afternoon.  It must be cautioned, however, that no meaningful conclusions can be drawn from this extremely small sample size.  The heated race on the DFL side in the 5th district has led many political insiders to expect above average turn out in the 5th district but it remains to be seen what the final numbers will look like.  The numbers are as follows (polling place followed by number of ballots processed as of 2PM):
- N Mpls (44th & Giraurd): 138
- N Mpls (Patrick Henry High School): 63
- Kenwood (Kenwood Park): 273
- St Louis Park (Rec Center): 268

5:22 pm – Abdi has reported there are people handing out Ember Reichgott Junge literature at two locations and telling voters that Keith Ellison is “not a real Muslim.”  This sounds like a rerun of a similar attack on Fareen Hakeem during last year’s primary.  Please note that although the person in the Hakeem case said he was associated with rival Peter McLaughlin’s campaign, he in fact was not.

4:30 pm – Duluth for Jeffers has posted an email sent out to Sue Jeffers supporters.  WCCO has some updates on voter turnout

3:30 pm – Mother Jones has an article up about anti-war candidates in primaries that mentions the 5th, and Forbes mentions the 5th as well.  In St. Cloud, they are voting not just on candidates, but also a school bond referendum.

2:00 PM – Noah has the view from the U
