State Sen. Paul Koering took a lot of flack from marriage equality advocates and progressive bloggers in recent weeks because he says he won’t vote for a bill to extend marriage rights to gay and lesbian couples. In an interview with CNN last weekend, Koering explained his position in greater depth.
“Just because I’m gay that doesn’t mean I have to be for gay marriage,” he said. Koering and openly gay state Sen. Scott Dibble, a Minneapolis DFLer who says he will vote for marriage equality, sat down with CNN to discuss their differences.

I can respect people having their own opinions, but it is very difficult to respect an openly gay man not supporting equal rights. It just makes no sense to me.

Senator Koering should just allow gays and progressives to suspect and believe he is a moron rather than open his mouth and prove it.

I met with Senator Koerring in order to discuss these views with him, and have found that he doesn’t have any decent reasoning behind his views.

Just because he doesn’t want to get married doesn’t mean all gays should suffer for that!

I applaud Senator Koering for representing his constituents in this matter, which is what public office is all about. That takes courage and integrity.
