North Dakota Capitol
North Dakota legislators are proposing a law that could have national implications. Dubbed the Personhood bill, SF 1572 would grant every fertilized egg in the state full rights, and any intentional death of that fertilized egg would constitute murder. It’s already passed the North Dakota House and will be considered by an anti-abortion Senate. And while Gov. John Hoeven hasn’t spoken publicly about the bill, he is opposed to abortion.
“This sparsely populated rural state that’s proud of its conservative roots could fundamentally alter the rights of women across the country,” said Tim Stanley of Planned Parenthood of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota (PPMNS). “We feel confident that the more people hear about 1572, the less comfortable they’ll feel about it.”
There’s a lot to be uncomfortable about, said Stanley.
The bill reads (PDF), “The state shall naturalize all preborn persons and shall afford to them all the privileges and immunities of state citizenship guaranteed in… the Constitution of North Dakota.”
The one privilege that North Dakota plans to deny fertilized eggs? “The state is not required to include preborn children in state and local censuses,” the bill reads.
But while the bill clarifies how to count fertilized eggs and fetuses for the census, it leaves many more questions open.
“It’s possible that this bill would could result in criminal prosecution for women who have a miscarriage,” said Stanley. “Under this language a miscarriage could be investigated for manslaughter or reckless abandonment.”
Stanley also pointed to North Dakota law that makes it illegal for two people to ride a bike built for one. If the Personhood bill passed, a pregnant woman could not legally ride a bike.
“We are making sure that as many North Dakotans as possible hear about this bill and its implications,” he said.
Rep. Dan Ruby, the Republican lawmaker from Minot who authored the bill, has made it clear that his intention with this bill is go all the way to the United States Supreme Court with a challenge to Roe v. Wade.
“I think North Dakota will be on the map to be the first state in recent years to mount a legitimate challenge to Roe v. Wade,” Ruby told the Bismarck Tribune in February.
But this week, he backed off a bit after his bill became a lightning rod in North Dakota politics. He said, “The bill does not contain language that even mentions abortion at all. It simply defines when life begins which, through scientific language, defines life to begin at conception. What is so harmful about that?”
But reproductive-rights advocates see plenty that is harmful in this legislation. “There are no life or health exceptions for women in this bill,” said Stanley. That could put the life of a woman in jeopardy in order to grant “rights” to a fertilized egg.

This proposed North Dakota amendment is a good and fair answer to the questions posed. We all begin when a sperm fertilizes an egg, and that event give us our unique DNA– all the DNA and the only DNA we will ever have. That DNA is what makes each of us the unique individuals we are, and so the North Dakota proposal is the most sensible, fair, and scientifically correct approach to the issues raised. Of course the abortion mills want to keep charging $400 or $500 for baby butcheries that only cost them $10 to do with their re-used surgical equipment and tossaway paper gowns and masks. Planned Parenthood isn’t worried about women’s rights– only their blood profits. Planned Parenthood is on video (from Live Action Films) covering up rapes of underage girls and protecting their abusers, while trying to get the girls across state lines to cover up their rapes and pregnancies. The true motives of guys like Stanley are obvious, like with any other killers who want to conceal what they are actually doing. Just look at http://www.100abortionpictures.com or http://www.abortionno.org to see what Stanley is trying to cover up.

Good for North Dakota! May the bill pass!!
The majority of quotes and opinions come from people and Planned Parenthood, an organization that makes it money destroying the unborn. Let’s be real here: Does Planned Parenthood really care about two people riding a bike or really think a miscarriage will be investigated for murder? Hardly. They don’t want their bottom line hurt by a diminised ability to capitalize on the murdering of the unborn. It’s that simple.

Let us not expose the truth that the world in overpopulated already. Let us ruin the poor young girls life with the burden of a child with all associated costs and tribulations.
Let us dictate our religion upon you all. Freedom of religion means freedom to accept the truth from our lord and christ, Jesus – and ONLY Jesus.
People who look down their noses at people who face insurmountable odds are hypocrites, and this means all right to lifers, religious zealots, and the American branch of the Taliban!
I was victim to religious zealotry, and know of what I speak.
Push your religion all you want – up until it clashes against changing ME, then you can all step off. Choice. It is time to be heard.

Thank GOD the American Indian Tribes in this state may help the poor girls get an abortion, because they are SOVEREIGN.

Let’s hope they also include a provision whereby North Dakota is responsible for these persons born under this proposed new law for their entire life. Pay their welfare, lock them up if they commit a crime. All on North Dakota’s dime no matter where that person lives or committed the crime. After all, North Dakota insisted that this individual had a right to life. We should all insist North Dakota has an obligation to these individuals that follows them for life. Government needs to butt the hell out of peoples’ lives. Life is “precious” until that person is a welfare recipient or a criminal and then they are suddenly a burden. Only a sparsely populated area could see this as a good idea. If they are going to insist on having dominion over life, its for the ENTIRE life. Good luck with that, ND.

As soon as an egg is fertilized it is not a “fertilized egg” but an embryo (Biology 101). We were all at one time in that stage of development. The primary purpose of government is to secure the God-given rights of its people, and they include unborn babies. The parents of those children are responsible for their welfare. Charity demands our help in difficult circumstances and this is best done at the local level. A child is not a burden but a gift from God. May those of you with such bitterness and hatred come to know the love and mercy of God.

I’ll not be catagorized by you as bitter or hateful. You don’t know me. All you know is your RELIGION, and your DESIRE to place it on me by law.
Try telling a drug addicted mother that a child is not a burden. Try telling the child (who sees horrors you can’t imagine!)
Your perceptive perfection is unattainable on this earth, you would think a religious idiot would know that.
And again, quit pushing your idea of GOD on me.

Actually a fertilized egg becomes a zygote which in turn becomes a blastocyst then an embryo (Biology 101).

I hope that grand juries are impaneled any time a women has a miscarriage in North Dakota. Just like we would in any other potential manslaughter case.
In addition, all women should have monthly pregnancy tests, otherwise they could have a miscarriage and refuse to report it to law enforcement for investigation.
You are either serious about protecting these single celled human beings or you aren’t. If you are willing to let people do things that induce miscarriage and let them get away with it, you are not protecting single cell human life.
Can we at least accuse all the poor people of in utero abuse if they have a miscarriage?

A solution for those who want to adopt but cannot find a child. To save a life!
Not a real balanced story–more on the Planned Parenthood protection side–but good to know.
Maybe North Dakota will be the place to go to adopt an zygote–a snowflake baby!

It’s not about religion or God, ZNOFOB, it is about defining personhood. Scientifically speaking, human life begins the moment a sperm and egg meet, creating a self-contained, whole, and unique individual. Because it’s DNA is unique from that of it’s mother or father’s, it cannot be described as “part” of the mother’s body.
And I would like to also clarify that by the time the woman realizes she’s pregnant (a few weeks into pregnancy) the child’s cells have already begun to differentiate and by the time she can have an abortion, the heart has already formed, and in some cases started to beat, and the neural tube may have even closed by this point.
If you need information on abortion, I suggest http://www.abort73.com, it has statistics and information and intelectually honest arguments to abortion

Too many people on the planet already that are completely miserable. If you can’t see that, you are brain dead. Too many people screaming about the rights of organic matter but are no where to be found when these kids need someone. With the creation of life comes great responsibility. Not everyone is born to responsible, loving environs. Ask the girl whose father raped her if life is “precious.” Ask the kid of a crack addict. Seems like pro-lifers always see everything under this rosy, narrow scope where everything is just perfect and “God will provide.” Please. Get a brain,

ND is only proposing to have a verified and simple truth recognized. The rest of the US is too blinded by the blood of their children to care about teh recognition of obvious truths.
Their states allow murder, so the 5th commandment is trumped there. How stupid people have become.

Let’s hope and pray this law is passed and signed! Then just maybe the end to the American abortion holocaust will be coming soon. It took 250 years for us as a nation to recognize the personhood and rights of the African, I hope it doesn’t take that long for us to recognize the personhood and rights of the unborn.

Sixty years ago, six million Jews were exterminated and to this day,as it should, the world still laments that atrocity. Sixty years ago,DOCTORS in those extermination camps performed horrible experiments on men, women, and especially children, and the world still hunts for these animals, as it should. Here we are today in the “land of the free” ( to kill our un-born children) and FIFTY MILLION CHILDREN have been slaughtered, torn limb from limb, heads crushed, chemically burned to death while still in their mothers womb. Are these so called doctors hunted down? What makes them so different than Doctor Mengele and his group? What Mengele did in 1942 was legal in Germany at that time, just like baby killing is legal here…….now. So I really see no difference between Mengele in his crematory and our doctors in their abatoirs. Actually there is a difference, the German doctors are hated, while ours are celebrated! Aren’t we such a civilized people!

The research that has been done shows that laws that try to prevent abortions have no effect to reducing abotions: the rate of abortions in countries where it is illegal have the same rate where it is legal and safe. The only difference passing a law like this has is on the lives of the women who attempt to use self-help or quacks in abortion. Abortions will continue at the same rate despite the law just as it would continue to rain if the cretins of the North Dakota Legislature decided to make it against the law to rain. Isn’t it against the law to commit fornication or adultery? How’s that working for ya?
To the morons above like Randy Crawford (who label anyone who disagrees with him as “murderer”), Jack, John70, Kmbold or alexandra, the pain suffered by the women who die or otherwise suffer from botched abortions, this is a small price for poor “unborn”. No amount of human suffering measures in their little minds to the so-called “holocaust” of unborn. Think of all of the “unborn” killed by the 160 million women worldwide who use IUDs. (Intrauterine devices).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intrauterine_device
So, if you count all of those zygtes, embryos, or whatever they are, you’re probably understating the scope of this “holocaust”. The Jews forced into concentration camps, used for hideous medical experiments, gassed and starved by the Nazi Final Solution have nothing on the untold suffering of “unborn” now do they?

I just love talking to the pro-abortion people, they can tie themselves in knots trying to justify the murder of infants! Gee, I really think I would much rather be a “cretin” or a “moron” than one of the “enlightened” baby killers. I guess the slaughter of FIFTY MILLION INFANTS really is a small price to pay for the “suffering” of those poor women who endured those abortions.Oh yeah, those “zygtes, embryos, or whatever they are”? They are called infants, or babies, some even call them
human beings! Imagine that?

only way for you to escape your eternal damned fate is to repent

John 70, worldwide in the last 60 years alone the number is actually OVER 300,000,000. Over 3 times what Lenin, Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot could murder x3 all put together in all their genocides. See the johnson archive for statistics.

@Alexandra from March 13, you say “Scientifically speaking, human life begins the moment a sperm and egg meet, creating a self-contained, whole, and unique individual.”
That’s the point – it is NOT SELF-CONTAINED. Fertilized eggs, or concepti, or fetuses, are NOT SELF-CONTAINED. They are not little astronauts floating in outer space.
Slavery has been illegal in this country for over 100 years. A woman or girl is not the slave of her state, not the slave of the federal government, and not the slave of a fertilized egg, either. She is not your slave, nor the slave of your church.
Do you understand what criminalizing abortion means? Are you serious about using police and prisons to force women to bear children they do not want, literally at gunpoint? And if you don’t trust a woman with a choice, why are you willing to trust her with a child?
Comment posted March 18, 2009 @ 1:36 pm
Over ninety percent of the abortions performed are done for the reason of inconvenience to the woman/teenager. No amount of suffering, poverty, or inconvenience trumps murder. (what a materialistic point of view that thinks it’s horrible to be poor.) There is no life that is not worth living, (otherwise most of you pro-aborts with your pesemistic attitudes towards life would have killed yourselves by now). These women/teenagers excersised all the choice they ever should have been alloted when they opened their legs in the first place. We’re not the same as animals. Animals have no higher intellect. If abstinance from alcohol and drugs works, so does abstinance from sex. The woman can do what ever she wants with her body, including keeping it to herself. The body of someone else, even if it depends on her for 9 months, is not hers to do with as she pleases. There are consequences to your actions. You can’t eliminate your problems at will. The link between breast cancer and abortion is proof of that.

This is a classic example of poisoning the well by attempting to equate the zygote with an ovum.) An egg is fertilized and becomes a zygote almost instantaneously! A zygote develops into an embryo about two weeks later.
This is why French geneticist Jerome L. LeJeune, while testifying before a Senate Subcommittee, asserted:
To accept the fact that after fertilization has taken place a new human has come into being is no longer a matter of taste or opinion. The human nature of the human being from conception to old age is not a metaphysical contention, it is plain experimental evidence. [2]
http://www.religioustolerance.org/abo_fetu.htm
At conception: One very lucky spermatozoon out of hundreds of millions ejaculated by the man will penetrate the outside layer of the ovum and fertilize it. This happens typically in the outer third of one of the woman’s Fallopian tubes. The surface of the ovum changes its electrical characteristics and normally prevents additional sperm from entering. A genetically unique entity is formed shortly thereafter, called a zygote. This is commonly referred to as a “fertilized ovum.” However that term is not really valid because the ovum ceases to exist after conception. Half of the zygote’s 46 chromosomes come from the egg’s 23 chromosomes and the other half from the spermatozoon’s 23. It has a unique DNA structure, different from that of the ovum and the spermatozoon. The zygote “…is biologically alive. It fulfills the four criteria needed to establish biological life:
1. metabolism,
2. growth,
3. reaction to stimuli, and
4. reproduction.” [1]
It can reproduce itself through twinning at any time up to about 14 days after conception; this is how identical twins are caused.
Conception is the point that most, or all, pro-life groups and conservative Christians define as the beginning of pregnancy. [8] Most of these groups define the start of a human person as occurring at conception. [Since 1965] The medical definition of the start of pregnancy is about 10 days later, at implantation. The zygote divides into two cells, called blastomeres. They subdivide once every 12 to 20 hours as the zygote slowly passes down the fallopian tubes.
http://www.christiananswers.net/q-sum/q-life000.html
You did not come from a zygote.
You once were a zygote.
You did not come from an embryo.
You once were an embryo.
You did not come from a fetus.
You once were a fetus.
You did not come from an adolescent.
You once were an adolescent.

Abortion is murder, plain and simple. It makes me puke that my tax dollars indirectly go towards abortion via Planned Parenthood (what a great name btw. why not change it to Planned Murder or Planned Abortion?) There are thousands of couples in this country willing to adopt a baby. The days of orphanages in this country are long over. The days of the Roe vs. Wade decision should be long over also.

Freedom. Freedom of thought. Freedom of religion.
When will people recognize we all have different thoughts, and beliefs. Two people with two different beliefs does not mean one is necessarily wrong. Just different. Being different is not wrong, or illegal, its just different.
We will never end war or conflict in this world until we accept those who think different from ourselves. Your way is not the only way.
I believe you have the right to be different. I may not agree with your thinking, but you have rights just like me. I will not partake in your ideas. You do not have to join in mine. We’re different.
I’m OK with your difference. But don’t force your ideals on me!

I’ve had an abortion. My choice. My right. Men need to be held equally accountable for their actions as well seeing as how it takes two to make a baby. They should faces charges for reckless abandonment. People need to smarten up. You can’t control women anymore, so get over it. Live your life and let God do his job – its not your job to judge.

“If you don’t like slavery, then don’t own a slave! Who are you to oppose your morality on me?”
“The Jew is a foul degenerate, better to purge from us the entire race now than to allow them to breed and plague our progeny”
Friends if you do not “judge” – “right” from “wrong” – you are traveling a blazing “one-way” course to “perversion” and “degradation” that will eventually land you in a “lake of fire”! Revelation 21:8
We respect the dignity of all human life from cradle to the grave, or should I say womb to the tomb.
Abortion is not a right, no more than slavery was.

The fact is that a zygote has been scientifically demonstrated to be a unique, living member of the human species. Normally we call unique, living members of the human species “people” with certain “rights”. With this bill, ND is just seeking to be consistent and follow where logic leads–to some surprising places, perhaps!
There may be a few other statutes whose language needs amending, after this.
But consistency is the key. This really is not so much a question of whether these are human beings–science has proven they are. It is a question of whether all human beings have rights, or whether some human beings are disposable. And beware promoting the idea that some human beings can be classified “disposable”–you may find yourself dumped into that classification some day.

Does a zygote, blastocyte, embryo have consciousness or a soul?…A women with endometriosis often suffers from problems with a blastocyte implanting. If it doesn’t it leaves the body with the menstral blood. Should we sterilize all women with endometriosis to make sure this doesn’t happen?…To all those thousands of couples wanting to adopt a baby, why don’t you adopt an older child?. Ted Bundy was once an embryo; do you think he had a soul?…At least 15% of pregnancy spontaneously end (low estimate)(ergo if 6 billion people are alive then 900 million were terminated by God)…Should we be mad at God for allowing this to happen? Shouldn’t we be storming the churches? What do you suppose God did with all of those souls. Ever see someone die? All essence of life vanishes, only the body remains. A body without a soul is nothing. If the brain is not developed there is no consciousness. Would we be justified in forcing a child or a rape victim to carry a pregnancy to term? Why don’t we help feed the children that already exist and have consciousness and suffering. Women become pregnant for all sorts of reasons – rape, birth control failure, or even just poor judgement. Do you really feel you have the right to make her have a child? Do really feel that in poor countries, desperate women are worthless and deserve death from illegal botched abortions? Who gives you the right to decide?
