Gov. Tim Pawlenty is dancing into the Sweet 16. Boasting an impressive No. 2 seed, T-Paw dispatched former Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo in the opening round of National Public Radio’s 32-candidate contest to pick the 2012 Republican presidential nominee.
Up next for Pawlenty, however, is a redoubtable darling of the conservative base: Newt Gingrich. In early voting, Minnesota’s two-term governor is leading by a 53-46 percent margin. If Pawlenty can hold off Newt, top-seeded Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin looms menacingly on the horizon.

The first requirement to be a repub candidate is the “GQ” factor. You have to be really tall, with broad shoulders, a big square jaw and a big square head. No IQ test is required.
If you’re female, pulchritude is required. The gold standard is the “anchorwoman” look. That means being a former “Miss Half-baked Alaska” or a Michelle Bachmann lookalike. Again, it doesn’t matter if you can’t walk and chew gum at the same time.
It’s the IR’s fixation with “male model” candidates that gave us clowns like Jon Grunseth and Cal Ludeman.
