State Senate Majority Leader Dean Johnson faced a primary challenger this year from Michael Cruze but was able to pull an easy victory and now heads into a tought fight to hold his seat.Johnson got 61 percent and Cruze recieved 39 percent.
Johnson has been caught up in controversy over his statements on gay marriage. This controversy caused the Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life to come in with financial support for Cruze.
Scott Fischbach, executive director of Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life, said his organization will continue to campaign against Johnson.
“It’s on to November,’’ said Fischbach when contacted with news that Johnson was the primary winner. “This sets the stage for a clear contest in November,’’ he said.West Central Tribune
Johnson will now face Republican Joe Gimse who lost narrowly in 2002. With the added money and publicity from antichoice and anti gay marriage groups this race will be very close.
