Bachmann calls for gun ownership in public housing
Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at 1:33 am
Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., spoke on the House floor Tuesday in opposition to federal laws that prohibit firearm possession in public housing, drawing a sharp rebuke by Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif.
Bachmann submitted a motion that said the government “shall not accept as reasonable any fees for enforcing any provision of a dwelling lease agreement… that requires the registration of or prohibits the possession of any firearm that is possessed by an individual for his or her personal protection or for sport the possession of which is not prohibited, or the registration of which is not required, by existing law.”
Bachmann argued that public housing residents have a legal right to possess firearms in their homes. Waters countered that gun violence is a major problem in housing authorities and that the federal government has the right to set the rules in leases for those living on federal property. To Bachmann, Waters responded, “Give.. me.. a break. All of us are much more responsible than this motion.” The video has more.
And even more from Liberal in the Land of Conservative.

Follow the Logic “Waters countered … that the federal government has the right to set the rules in leases for those living on federal property.”
Waters is probably right. And when we have government-run health care, it will be equally right for government to set nutrition rules and behavior rules to curb unhealthy behaviors that increase the public cost of health care — finally some rules on promiscuous sexual behavior, perhaps? Government currently runs the public education system — why shouldn’t it set education standards? Why shouldn’t it control the curriculum? Maybe the IRS is the best source to determine what is and is not the free exercise of religion.
Tocqueville warned, “It must not be forgotten that it is dangerous to enslave men in the minor things in life.” Yet the more government extends itself into personal areas of our lives, the more dangerous it becomes to the fact and spirit of individual liberty. Unless, like Waters is prone to flow, one picks and chooses good versus bad government intervention.
Guns in public housing? Of course, we shouldn’t allow poor black people their second amendment rights. That’s not racism; it’s common sense. Just like its common sense not to enable poor black parents to choose schools for their kids. The government supports them, and as Waters says, the government can set the rules. Sort of nationalization of the slavery industry, isn’t it?
