Minneapolis didn’t crack the top 10 in this month’s “America’s 50 Greenest Cities” ranking by Popular Science. (It ranked 11th, one place above St. Paul). But the magazine did spotlight the city’s citizen climate change grants:

“If you’ve got a world-saving idea, the City of Lakes will give you, your church or your community group the money to get it done. Twenty $1,000 mini-grants and five $10,000 awards were distributed last year to programs ranging from household power-consumption monitors to “block club talks” about global warming. A similar initiative has sprung up in Seattle.”

The city is gearing up for a second round. This year they’re a little larger this time around, up to $1,500 for each micro grant. An informational meeting will take place this afternoon, Feb. 28, from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Northeast Library, 2200 Central Ave. NE, and details are also available here. Applications are due 4 p.m. March 20.
