Obama raised more $$ in February than Clinton and McCain combined

Barack Obama raised $55 million in February.
You read that right: The Illinois senator raised $55 million in a 29-day month, crushing all previous records and providing a bit of pushback against what has been a pretty good media week for his rival, Senator Hillary Clinton of New York. $45 million of Obama’s total was raised online.
Clinton had a good February herself, raising $36 million. In what would have been an excellent month in any previous presidential election, presumptive Republican nominee-in-waiting John McCain raised $12 million, still lagging well behind both leading Democrats.

Barack’s appeal I think a big reason for his fundraising prowess lies in his apparent naivete of the fundamental principle of monopoly capitalism: the law of supply and demand. By mandating and subsidizing the purchase of health insurance, you drive up demand for it, driving up the price. By mandating the purchase of carbon offsets (“cap and trade”) you create a disincentive for conservation. If corporate America can make money off pollution, they are not about to minimize it and reduce demand for offsets. Is Barack going to allow backyard gardeners to sell offsets to the powerplant? Or will Georgia Pacific step in and write a few regulations (like the prescription drug benefit)?

Just for comparison While it’s been a coupla decades, and inflation has eaten into it, it’s worth noting that this is exactly what the Metrodome cost to build.
