In a clip on The Daily Show last night, Obama chief of staff Rahm Emanuel defended the release of secret Bush administration memos relating to extreme interrogations by stating that much of the details were already published elsewhere. “It’s been written,” he said. “Go get The New York Review of Books. It’s there.” To that, host Jon Stewart, donning a monocle and a faux upper-crust drawl, gave a back-handed compliment to a Minneapolis-based journal, positioning it alongside elite — and, apparently, low-circulation — literary publications.
“Oh is it now? …It’s been in the Utne Reader? It’s in the Paris Review. Literally tens of people have heard about it. We almost got it into McSweeney’s.”
