When someone is dying, the person that is closest to them needs to be able to make decisions for them. It has nothing to do with gender, marriage, family or anything else. Only a fool would make this a political issue. Living wills are not the perfect answer but they help. Consider that options if you have concerns about this. I worked in the ICU for many years.
