Would Jesus torture?
Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at 2:35 pm
The Associated Press asks prominent evangelicals and leaders of the religious right if Jesus would condone torture. Some evangelicals say every life is sacred and torture is not peaceful and therefore incongruent with Christian teachings. But religious right leader Gary Bauer says that while Jesus wouldn’t torture, he would permit his followers to do so.
“There are a lot of things Jesus wouldn’t do because he’s the son of God,” Bauer told the AP. “I can’t imagine Jesus being a Marine or a policeman or a bank president, for that matter. The more appropriate question is, ‘What is a follower of Jesus permitted to do?’”
“I think if we believe the person we have can give us information to stop thousands of Americans from being killed, it would be morally suspect to not use harsh tactics to get that information,” Bauer said.

Well Gary,
I believe YOU have information that can save thousands of Americans from being killed. It would be morally suspect of me not to use “harsh tactics” on you. When you come to Minnesota let’s get together and do what Jesus’ followers would do.

Doesn’t surprise me. I figured that ‘turn the other cheek’ stuff was just garbage.
But would Jesus go for crucifixion? Cause, you know.

Chascates,
I’m quite sure Jesus would be in favor of crucifixion, but only with horrific scourging preceding it. And he would know, eh? It’s interesting that Jesus doesn’t expect his followers to be like him, and even more interesting that Jesus, being the Son of God and all, couldn’t qualify for many jobs we have. Do cops know they can’t ask “what would Jesus do?” It’s clear that bank presidents never ask “what would Jesus do”.

I suspect as long as a “TRUE Christian” (meaning Republican) did it its OK by him.

As Christians we are compelled to live our lives as Christ lived. Bauer himself acknowledges that Jesus, being the Son of God, would not torture. But he is deluding himself when he claims Jesus would allow us to do so. No, He would not. He would not allow us to sin when he told us to be holy as He is holy. Not when he commanded us to move beyond “an eye for an eye” and instead to “turn the other cheek.” Jesus said to love your enemies and to pray for those who seek your demise. I do not know who Bauer thinks he is speaking for, but it is not Christ. And he should be ashamed.

I think Sean Hannity and Gary Bauer should be forced to waterbaord each other.

Jesus is just a sugar daddy to Gary Bauer and that’s all he ever wants to know about him. Gary knows who’s sending checks to his bogus organization and he knows what they want to hear. “Jesus’ followers can waterboard.” Ka-ching, ka-ching.

Since Jesus was tortured on a cross, he probably has a phobia about torture and would probably not want to Do That Unto Others!! Ye who are so spiritually high you are no earthly good sicken the rest of us. Get some bricks, build a bridge, and get over your damn self!

This is a shameful misrepresentation of the message of the Gospel. The Christian right preaches a new Gospel as Paul warned about. It is the American Hybrid Gospel. This is not the gospel of Jesus Christ

Thank you Pastor Prude & Emily for being the voice of reason. And I like Mr Hayduke’s comment, even though we shouldn’t participate in that either.
Perhaps I’m just a preacher’s kid that is a little more willing to speak a little more harsh about the tactics Mr. Bauer is confusing with being acceptable to Christ.
I only recall there being only 12 disciples, not 24. Jack Bauer wasn’t a disciple of Jesus, so why are you [Gary Bauer] conforming to his gospel?
Allow me to make this easy enough for you to understand. If you are a follower of Jesus Christ wouldn’t you do what he does? Isn’t he the example?
Listen, God is no respecter of persons, this includes his son. The belief Jesus wouldn’t or couldn’t do something because he’s the Son of God would not be an acceptable excuse according to the Bible. That would mean that God is no respecter of persons that isn’t his son. (Romans 2:11)
Why should I engage in a public debate with Pharisees and Sadducees on the issue of torture when the answer to the question is simple and clear? How does the issue of torture align with what is know as the Greatest Commandment?
Torture contradicts the instructions, examples and teachings of love your neighbor as yourself. If you choose to become a follower of Jesus Christ, do what is written. Too often we as Christians act like the priest on that road from Jerusalem to Jericho and remain silent when we should speak. Many act as the Levite did when he saw the man who was robbed and left for dead and just pass to the other side of the road. I don’t want any trouble. I just go along to get along. I know some may not understand what I’m referencing, but I’m sure followers of Jesus Christ feel me. (Mark 12:28-31)
Who among us will act like the Samaritan when it comes to the issue of torture? This is the answer to what followers of Jesus are to do. Luke 10:25-37 is the information to stop thousands of Americans from being killed. It is morally suspect to use harsh tactics to get that information, when a better law has already been written and implemented.
You see this is the problem with Christian Extremism. Why adopt such a backwards thinking? And you’re surprised and/or upset by anyone who rejects Christianity? Christ and Christianity is not the problem, so-called Christians are. Come on, be honest with yourself. This sort of public example of the perverted beliefs placed upon Christianity, coupled with the systematic incorporation of theological bigotry and the denominational exclusionary practices in our segregated sanctuaries by those who proclaim to be followers of Jesus Christ is the problem and one of the real and factual arguments against Christianity. The statements such as the one Mr. Bauer offers and people who agree with him. When the doors of The Church is open what does the world see when they peak in?
Quit perverting Jesus to fit your own antiquated beliefs. Stop using Christ as your crutch of justification for your own illusions of morality and irrational conceptions. Would Jesus Torture? No.

Conservative “christians” are the modern counterparts of the Pharisees who had Jesus crucified.
They tortured Jesus, so it doesn’t surprise me that they would endorse torturing so-called “terror suspects”.

The PEW Research Center should be ashamed, really ashamed. They have spawned this whole debate by taking a very irresponsible poll and publishing the results just as irresponsibly. The debate has gotten so out of hand that nobody is searching for truth in it. Everyone has taken their sides and nothing else matters. Truth be damned.
Shame on PEW for this poll and shame on everyone else who refused to use their God-given brain to ask serious questions about it.
I’m done.

You see Jesus is like the president and his followers are like Jack Bauer. Jesus has all of these nasty evil things that he want’s done to people but can’t really have his hands dirtied by them.
