Not surprisingly, yesterday’s news that the Republican National Committee had taken time to draft a “resolution” to rename its opposition the “Democrat Socialist Party” got a scathing reply from MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann, who namechecks Rep. Michele Bachmann in his rebuke. But criticism also came from a less expected source: Michelle Malkin’s Hot Air. Chief blogger Allahpundit called the plan “stupid” and “reek[ing] of impotence”:
More than anything, this reeks of impotence, operating almost as a concession that the right’s argument on the merits that the left is evolving towards socialism isn’t working to shift public opinion. So now they’re going to up the ante by trying the hard sell: Just repeat “socialism” as much as possible to try to drive it into people’s skulls, never minding the fact that that term’s already lost some of its taboo and might well lose more as it goes further mainstream. Or at least, I hope that’s the GOP strategy here. The alternative, that they’re simply sticking their fingers in their ears and repeating “socialist” over and over out of spite like a five-year-old, is too depressing to contemplate. What’s next, a formal resolution declaring french fries “freedom fries” in the Republican Party henceforth and forevermore?
Olbermann’s point is similar: he gives a hearty “WTF?” to the RNC’s strategy, noting that, according to recent Pew polls, the party’s tactic hasn’t succeeded in tarring Barack Obama with the term “Socialist.” Fewer than 3 percent of those polled used the term to describe the president. Further, a recent Rasmussen survey found that barely half of Americans — 53 percent — prefer capitalism over socialism.
He quips: perhaps the likes of John Boehner, Michele Bachmann and Dick Cheney are actually “Democratic agents… moles, turncoats, political traitors” intent upon ruining the GOP’s reputation for decades to come.
Closer to home, MinnPost’s David Brauer tweets, “That oughta convince the independents, GOP. Keep talking among yourselves…”

Here’s what’s funny. 97% of the people in this country could’nt tell you what Socialism actually is.

Something else funny. 97% haven’t heard a good word about socialism — whatever is meant by it — in their entire lives, nor a bad word about capitalism. Maybe all but the conservative base are willing to look at real life and ask whether they need to rethink things.

A couple of years ago I was staying with some retired friends in vegas. The couple only watched Fox news. One day the older Gentleman who was living on social security told me “America has become to socialistic. Hopefully Bush will help change that.”. I pointed out that social security was arguably a “socialist program”. He remarked Well not that one, that ones good. I then pointed out that medicare and medicaid was a “socialist program”. He said those programs were good to. A few months later Bush was reelected and I remember how he got pissed at the republican party for attacking social security. This man had a picture of Himself standing next to George W Bush at a fundraiser when I was there. He said he threw away the picture.
I think the republicans might not understand that really only 2 percent of Americans are true capitalists. They can easily buy and sell the rest of us. Attacking Children and education worked for the republicans. Parents, Teachers and children are not politicaly active together. When they took on Social Security they took on retired people and they are politicaly active and savvy. The rebranding would only help Democrats. Because like my retired friends canidate said “fool me once shame on you. fool me twice and aaah ahh you cant fool me another time heh heh.”

Capitalism and socialism are not mutually exclusive folks. Using both of them in tandem is basically what Europe has been doing for the last 60 years. Are the Dutch, English, Swedes, etc commies? No way.
Also, these idiots at the RNC got the name of the party wrong. It should be there is a Democratic party, not a “Democrat Party”. I suppose they could have messed it up on purpose, but that would just be childish. Of course this whole story is childish anyway.
